Order books for Volvo XC40 P6 Recharge electric SUV, which Volvo claims is “the most affordable all-electric luxury vehicle on the local market,” will open on 26 July at 08h00 sharp.
The front-wheel-drive P6 is exclusively available through the My Volvo online store and it has a South African starting price of R1,075,000.
“A limited number of units will be offered, with priority given to the existing waiting list,” said Volvo South Africa. “Cars are scheduled to arrive in South Africa later in the year.”
P6 specifications
The new XC40 P6 Recharge features a single-motor setup on the front axle, as opposed to the P8 with its twin electric motors driving all four wheels.
As a result, the P6 produces a lower 170kW and 330Nm and turns the front tyres only, but it offers 5km more range at a maximum of 423km.
Completing the 0-100km/h sprint then takes 7.4 seconds for the more-affordable Volvo while top speed is pegged at 160km/h.
“Its braked towing capacity of 1,500 kg, meanwhile, matches that of its more powerful twin-motor sibling,” said the manufacturer.
As for charging, the P6’s 69kWh lithium-ion battery pack offers “very competitive charging capabilities” with the standard 11kW on-board charger – though it hasn’t been revealed exactly what they are yet.
For reference, the P8 with its 78kWh battery takes between 8-10 hours to fill up from 0-100% when making use of 11kW AC fast charging, so the P6 shouldn’t be too far off.
Inside the cabin, the newcomer is generously equipped offering buyers wireless smartphone charging, all-round parking sensors, a reverse camera, and the newest-generation Android-powered infotainment system with built-in Google Apps support.
Optional extras further consist of a heated steering wheel and seats, a panoramic sunroof, and 20-inch wheels – up from the standard 19 inches.
“All-new exterior paint colour choices, meanwhile, include Fjord Blue and Bright Dusk, while Silver Dawn – a popular hue also offered in the XC60 range – likewise joins the XC40 P6’s comprehensive colour palette,” said the Swedish carmaker.
Price
The new Volvo XC40 P6 Recharge has a South African starting price of R1,075,000.
Each purchase is accompanied by a five-year warranty and maintenance plan, three years of comprehensive insurance, use of a petrol car for two weeks per year for three years, a public charge cable, and a wall-box home charger.
“The announcement of local pricing for the XC40 P6 Recharge moves the Gothenburg-based company another step towards its global ambition of transforming into a fully-electric car company by 2030,” said Greg Maruszewski, managing director at Volvo Car South Africa.
