With the debut of Volvo’s new flagship EX90 coming up soon, on November 9, 2022, the brand late October shared a look at the SUV’s human-machine interface, and in true Volvo fashion, it’s based on minimalism. The new interface will feature “intelligent operation” to ensure only the most crucial information is shown or requested. Why? It’s so that the driver can remain focused on the road for as much time as possible, which decreases the chances of a collision.
Key driving information will still be housed in the digital instrument cluster, while secondary information, like navigation, media, and phone calls, plus various controls, is shown on a large vertically-based infotainment screen.
Volvo says the information presented will be dependent on the situation: different information will be shown whether you’re parked or driving, or in the middle of a phone call. There will also be a contextual bar that will offer suggestions for actions most suited to the present situation.

While that’s all well and good, we’d say perhaps consider making high-use functions, like the HVAC controls, accessible via hard-touch buttons, as opposed to a screen-based command.
“It’s all about providing you with the right information at the right time,” Thomas Stovicek, Volvo’s head of user interface development, said in a statement.
Although we’re far from ready for it, the EX90 will also have all the hardware necessary for self-driving operation. Perhaps thankfully, that capability won’t be available at launch; but Volvo is working on a “Ride Pilot” feature, which is aimed to allow hands-off, eyes-off travel on certain highways. There’s no set date yet for the release of that function, but the first place you’ll see it is in California, Volvo said.
