Volvo has launched the new XC90 T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid in South Africa with prices starting at R1,560,100.
The seven-seater SUV will be offered in two different trim levels – Inscription and R-Design.
Earlier this year Volvo also launched the electric XC40 P8 Recharge and the plug-in hybrid XC60 T8 Recharge, making this XC90 the company’s third electrified vehicle to be released in 2022.
This falls in line with Volvo’s aim to be a fully-electric car brand by 2030.
Hybrid technology
The Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge is powered by a 2.0-litre, supercharged and turbocharged petrol-hybrid engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The engine has an output of 233kW, which is then combined with an electric motor in the rear of the car that generates 107kW, for a total output of 340kW and 709Nm from the two powertrains combined.
This makes it the most powerful XC90 Volvo has ever made, it said.
The electric motor’s energy output of 18.8kW is applied to the SUV’s rear-wheels, improving the vehicle’s performance and all-wheel drive capabilities.
Acceleration is also improved, giving this particular XC90 a 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds.
The electric motor provides a range of 77km, which Volvo says should be more than enough for most local drivers to do their daily motoring on electric power alone.
Meanwhile, combined fuel consumption for the SUV is rated at 7.2l/100km.
“Local interest in electric vehicles continues to grow and a hybrid is an enticing stepping stone to electrified vehicles for the many South Africans who are considering switching to a more eco-friendly and fuel-efficient car,” said Volvo.
