The Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, one more familiar and the other more athletic, have won over European buyers with their appealing design, performance, power, and autonomy. The Swedish brand’s two small SUVs continue to sell well. However, the company is planning a surprise for 2022, which will be a valuable bonus for anyone looking to stand apart.
Volvo anticipated a significant increase in electric vehicle sales with the introduction of the new C40 Recharge. And time has shown him correct, as the Swedish business has committed all of its output for European clients through next March since last autumn.
A real overflow situation that results in a major delay in the delivery of new units ordered by consumers.
If they do so now, they will not obtain units until next autumn, a period of slightly over a year. However, the new C40 Recharge has not only played its own part, but it has also helped to reinforce the statistics of the more recognized model, which was the first to come in a highly hazardous gamble. The XC40 Recharge is also one of Volvo’s most popular models, with a ‘access’ variant recently added to the lineup. Despite its 231 horsepower electric powertrain and front-wheel drive, it may be considered such.
The Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge Twin will have a sportier appearance.
The “Recharge Twin” variant now tops the ranges of the two compact electric SUVs. This comprises of two electric motors and all-wheel drive, producing a not insignificant maximum power of 300 kW. A total of 408 horsepower is generated by a battery located between the axles that has a gross capacity of 78 kWh and a net capacity of 75 kWh. This combination, in both models, provides a maximum range of 420 kilometers on a single charge, according to the WLTP cycle.
However, for those who believe that a power number of more than 400 horsepower is insufficient, the Swedish brand has a significant innovation.
Upon payment, a wireless upgrade (OTA) will raise the maximum power of this “Recharge Twin” version by 50 kW (68 hp) per electric motor at a rate of 25 kW (34CV). A significant innovation predicted in the first half of 2022, with 476 horsepower and a performance comparable to a great sports vehicle, but without the Polestar seal or a particular look that exposes such cavalry.
It will limit the acceleration capacity from zero to 100 km / h by a few tenths of a second, recovering from 80 to 120 km / h more rapidly and with a more energetic reaction thanks to it, which will only be for customers who have these proprietary models and not subscription models. Because the additional will only be noticeable for a few seconds, the maximum autonomy will not be much lowered from 420 kilometers.
The past and the future
For years, it had been evident that the V40 would not have a direct replacement. After all, the small station wagon, which was discontinued in the summer of 2019, was built on the Ford Global-C platform, which was introduced in 2003. Instead, a variant with a sportier stance and increased ground clearance based on the current platform has become increasingly popular. Volvo has unveiled the C40, which is the company’s first vehicle built from the ground up for electric driving. After all, Volvo plans to sell every second car in the globe as an electric model by 2025, and exclusively electric cars should be available five years later.
Platform
Volvo and its Chinese parent firm Geely in Sweden created the CMA (Compact Module Architecture) platform. The platform’s flexibility, which is limited only by the distance between the front wheel hub and the pedals, allows for both conventional and entirely electric drivetrains. The XC40 was the first CMA vehicle. Following it came the Polestar 2, Lynk & Co. models 01, 02, 03, and 05, and several Geely cars, all with comparable proportions and engines.
With the two studies 40.1 and 40.2, Volvo provided an insight on the upcoming models in 2016. The 40.1 is the same as the XC40, whereas the 40.2 is an SUV coupé akin to the Polestar 2.
Exterior
The Volvo C40 is built on the XC40 Recharge’s recognizable look. In other words, the closed grille and pixel-based headlamps are inscribed on the front. Up to the B-pillar, the SUV and SUV coupé appear to be similar, after which the C40’s roof softly slopes towards the rear. The revised rear lights are stunning, with their light band interrupted towards the top. The tailgate’s redesigned form allows the lights to protrude even wider.
The XC40 is distinguished by an extra bead beneath the Volvo lettering. The flared baffles on the upper edge of the tailgate, as well as the flat back window and little spoiler, all help.
Equipment and the interior
The Volvo C40 shares the same interior design as the Volvo XC40, but with model-specific colors and ornamental accents. Leather is no longer utilized, as it was in the initial model. The driver adjusts his grip on a three-spoke steering wheel with chrome clasps and an almost square baffle. He’s staring at a computerized cockpit.
In the center display on the dashboard, he controls the convenience and infotainment systems. The latter was created in collaboration with Google and is based on Android. Drivers and passengers may utilize Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Play Store as a result. Software upgrades are done “over the air” (OTA), and limitless data usage implies constant communication.
Volvo provides a lane departure warning system, a collision warning system with steering intervention, and an emergency brake help system with vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle recognition, among other driver aid systems. The C40 will most likely be offered in the R Design Expression, R Design, Inscription Expression, Inscription, and Pure Electric equipment, much like the XC40 Recharge.
Transportation and loading
The Volvo C40, like the XC40 Recharge, is powered by two permanent magnet electric motors. They combine for a total of 408 horsepower on one axle. 660 Nm is the greatest torque. A single-stage gearbox provides the frictional connection, which is coupled to the gearshift lever through shift-by-wire technology.
The One Pedal Drive, like the XC40, allows the driver to manage recovery. As a result, the accelerator pedal may be used to modify deceleration and brake energy recovery in two phases.
