Volvo Australia has announced that its range of vehicles will be all electric by 2026, four years ahead of Volvo’s global plans to be emissions free by 2030.
The local arm of the Swedish brand has confirmed that there will be a new electric vehicle every five years, taking its total to six EVs on the market by 2026.
Volvo Car Australia’s managing director Stephen Connor said that the local division didn’t want to wait until 2030 to make their move.

“We’re not waiting for the global strategy to come to force. I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.”
“I think if we go 2026, we will gain market share, we will get the early adopters,” Connor continued.
Following on from the XC40 Pure Electric and the new C40 Pure Electric, Volvo Australia will bring more EVs to our market including the recently teased EX90 electric large SUV and a rumoured EX30 small crossover.
All Volvos will be pure electric in Australia from 2026
The brand aims for a two percent market share by 2026 and wants to sell 20,000 units, with Volvo Australia saying that figure is its ‘natural level’.
Volvo has its sights set on being the first combustion-engined company to fully transition to electric vehicles only by 2026.
Its current local lineup is completely electrified, comprised of both hybrid and EV models.

Volvo Australia is set to bring charging points to their dealership network where charging will be free for all Volvo owners.
Volvo Australia’s Stephen Connor said that “we’re not going to wait for New South Wales or for any of the governments to come up to speed. We will give our customers that infrastructure, which I think is the only right thing to do to give them good assurance”.

“Wherever they (customers) are, doesn’t matter who they are. And whether they buy a used electric vehicle, it doesn’t matter, they will be able to go to one of our retailers, plug it in for 10, 15, 20 minutes, whatever it might be”.
What could Volvo’s full electric lineup look like in 2026?
A previous Chasing Cars article outlined Volvo’s global EV plans for 2030, including the possibility of an electric S60 sedan, C30 small car and two ‘activity vehicles’ that could lean towards versions of the V60 wagon.
Volvo Australia already has fully electric versions of the XC40 and C40 in Australia. To build on this, the EX90 and mooted EX30 will follow and possibly an electric EX60 – however Chasing Cars understands the electric XC60 could be last as it’s the most recent update to the range.
