Volkswagen could introduce the new Polo GTI in India as a fully imported model. However, the new Volkswagen Polo GTI will be introduced in limited numbers only. Thanks to the government’s rule that allows an automobile manufacturer to import up to 2,500 units without the need for homologation.
Volkswagen is also not new to importing CBU models in India as the German automaker imported the Volkswagen T-Roc SUVs and the 7-seater Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace SUVs, both of which became very successful in India.
Apart from that, the Volkswagen Polo GTI is not new for India as the German automaker had previously imported the fifth-generation, 3-door, Volkswagen Polo GTI In India back in 2016.
The 3-door hatchback became highly successful post the introduction of GST in mid-2017. This effectively reduced the prices for the Polo GTI in India and quickly go sold out.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI previously imported to India was based on the PQ25 platform and it used a 1.8-litre TSI engine with 190bhp. This engine coupled with a 7-speed DSG transmission helped the 3-door hatchback reach 100km/h in just 7.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 233km/h.
The fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo continued to be in production for almost 12 years in India despite the sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo being sold in the international markets for some time now.
One of the reasons for Volkswagen not being able to introduce the new Polo in India is due to its size. The new Volkswagen Polo is more than 4-metres in length and this puts the new Polo in a different tax bracket.
Speaking about the new Volkswagen Polo, the GTI variant of the new Volkswagen Polo GTI is available as a 5-door version and features a larger 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine with power in excess of 200bhp.
Apart from that, the new Volkswagen Polo GTI comes with a 7-speed DSG transmission with an electronic differential. This setup allows the new Polo GTI to hit 100km/h from a standstill in just 6.5 seconds.
In addition to that, the introduction of the new 2022 Volkswagen Polo GTI may push other manufacturers such as Hyundai, Toyota, Renault and a few more to introduce their highly-rated hot hatches such as Toyota GR Yaris, Hyundai i20 N, Renault Megane, RS etc.
Thoughts About Volkswagen Polo GTI Coming To India
The automobile market has changed dramatically over the few years and we believe it is time for automotive manufacturers to tease the Indian consumers by introducing hot-hatches in limited numbers.
