Let’s kick this new mini-series off by taking a look at a day trip itinerary to unorthodox places in the West!

Abdhus Salam Rojak

This is a recommendation by Motorist Editorial’s resident foodie is left field even by local foodie standards. With a wide selection of items like dough fritters, fish cakes, cuttlefish, sausages, tofu, prawn fritters, and even offcuts like beef lung (paru), you know that this is a stall that takes their Indian Rojak seriously.

The food is fried upon order, and served with a generous amount of their sweet and spicy sauce, that is also complimented by a slight nutty flavour. Best part, this stall is halal, so no one feels left out. As this is located within a HDB market, on-site parking is readily available, though do expect to squabble for parking space during the lunch rush hours.

Salt & Light Archery

Burn off some lunch calories by paying a visit to Salt & Light Archery! Located right under West Coast Flyover, it boast up to 70 metres of sheltered ranges, so you can live out your Katniss Everdeen fantasies in shaded comfort. The venue caters for people of all skill levels, and even offers beginner courses available for children and adults should you wish to get further into archery.

Arena Country Club

There are two main attractions at this venue. You can get your adrenaline fix by paying a visit to The Karting Area, or soak in the experience of an authentic Japanese Onsen at Joya Onsen Cafe.

Want to satiate your need for speed in a safe environment? Do so by taking to the racetrack in their fun karts! Ensure you have your driving license (or an international equivalent) on hand so you can try out the faster, 50km/h karts. Otherwise, you’ll have to make do with the slower 30km/h karts.

Still, you’d more than feel a buzz whizzing around this 700 metre track. If you have little ones in tow, two seater karts are also on offer, which will allow them to feel the adrenaline rush in a safe and controlled environment!
What better way to soothe your aching bodies (especially after a day out on the track) than by soaking in Joya’s authentic Japanese hot springs! The brand prides themselves as a business that provides a ‘naturalistic Onsen environment for people of all ages to enjoy’.

There is a choice of a public bath, or various private rooms. If you’d like the privacy of soaking with your significant other and/or close friends, do pre-book the latter. Each visit comes with a complimentary ticket to their cafe, and you’ll be able to redeem a drink and dessert.

We spotted an EV charger on our recent visit to the premises, but it appears to not be live at the time of publishing.

Waffl

End the day off by rewarding yourself with some sweet treats at Waffl. As its name implies, this is a cafe that specialises in waffles, but with a twist. As with almost every other dessert cafe locally, you’d be able to pair waffles with gelatos. But the folks at Waffl insist on creating their own recipes for unique flavours such as roasted pistachio, creme brulee, hazelnut rocher and speculoos kaya.

But if waffles are not your speed, you can pair your gelato with bakes such as brownies, cookies or brookies. If you’re looking for something that is more main course territory, consider trying their wafflburgers. Think of McDonald’s McGriddles but with more pizzazz – these are essentially burgers, but with waffles instead of buns.

We recommend dropping by anytime from 4pm to 8pm, as this cafe does draw a strong late-night crowd!
