Planning to buy a new premium mid-size SUV in India soon? Chances are high that you, just like most other buyers in this segment, would be considering the SUVs like the MG Hector and the Tata Harrier. While both these SUVs are well renowned for their feature-rich and premium packages, there are a number of differences that separate the two from each other. The Hector was the first MG car in India and is still regarded as one of the most feature-rich offerings in the market whereas the Harrier on the other hand outshines most of the rivals with its stellar looks, sorted dynamics, and practical cabin. Which of the two SUVs makes better sense for you? Here is our detailed MG Hector Vs Tata Harrier comparison which will help you understand the two products better and make an informed choice.

To start with, the MG Hector price in India starts from ₹14.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) while the Harrier on the other hand is slightly more expensive. MG Hector Vs Tata Harrier – Engine, Gearbox, and Performance
The MG Hector, unlike the Harrier, is offered with two powertrain options which include a 1.5L turbo petrol and a 2.0L diesel. The petrol engine is good enough to deliver 141 bhp and 250 Nm of max torque while the diesel on the other hand delivers 167.6 bhp and 350 Nm. The Tata Harrier is only offered with a 2.0L Kryotec turbo diesel engine which boasts a peak power and torque output of 167.6 bhp and 350 Nm respectively. Both SUVs are offered with manual as well as automatic gearbox options depending on the engine options.
Having said this, the MG Hector boasts a softly tuned suspension setup and an extremely light steering wheel which makes it an excellent car for those looking for a comfortable and easy driving experience. The ladder-on-frame construction along with a heavy body weight not only results in strong body roll on the sharp corners, but also results in a lot of vertical movements at higher speeds. Despite that, we are not complaining as the overall highway stability is decent and the comfortable ride quality compensates for the not-so-great driving enthusiasts. Hence, if you are someone who loves pushing the car hard into the corners or prefers a more engaging driving experience, the Hector may not be the best choice.
The Tata Harrier, unlike the Hector, is underpinned by the Land Rover D8-derived OMEGARC monocoque platform and is appreciated for its strong dynamics. Despite a large footprint and a heavy kerb weight, the body roll is well controlled while the steering too is direct and communicative. The ride-handling balance is also better and all the bad roads and potholes are well absorbed by the suspension. In all, while the Hector is one of the most comfortable SUVs in the segment, the Harrier delivers a more balanced ride-handling experience.

Design And Dimensions
With the launch of the new-gen iteration, the brand now offers the Hector with a larger, diamond-like chrome grille and a revised bumper design at the front which gives it a more premium and fresh appeal. In addition to this, the SUV also features subtle updates at the rear including a new tail-light design with connecting LED light elements. In all, the new Hector continues with its bold and muscular styling which not only gives it a strong identity but also helps it boast a better road presence.
The Harrier however continues to feature the same elegant yet quirky styling which is largely dominated by a bold front fascia, classy rear styling, and a well-balanced side profile. Based on Tata’s Impact 2.0 design language, the Harrier does not fail to impress most people on the road and does have some Land Rover styling cues. Both the SUVs boast similar build quality and fit-finish levels, and picking one of the two designs is purely a subjective matter.

MG Hector Vs Tata Harrier Interiors And Features
Inside, the new MG Hector might remind you of the more expensive German cars with its overall dashboard layout and the materials used. For starters, it not only gets a first-in-segment vertically mounted infotainment system, but also features a number of other premium elements including a full-digital instrument console with infotainment system integration, soft-touch materials, a sophisticated centre console, and comfortable seats. The rear seat is no different and one will not fail but to notice the premium upholstery and acres of space for all the occupants.
The Tata Hector, with its classy and more elegant dashboard not only looks more mature and has a strong European feel. For starters, the faux-wood panels in the centre along with a floating infotainment system, tactile switch gear, and classy shade of chocolate brown do help in uplifting the overall in-cabin experience. The fit-finish levels of both the SUVs are comparable and so is the overall seating comfort and space availability. The Hector however does have an edge over the Hector when it comes to the availability of features and modern tech inside the cabin.
