Renault recently released their new “SUV-inspired” Triber, which aims to capture the budget market with a wallet-friendly price tag and seven seats.
The SUV elements come in the form of plastic side claddings that add extra paint protection, a front skid plate, a ground clearance of 182mm, and integrated roof rails capable of supporting up to 50kg.
When compared to the outgoing model, however, there is not much else different about this new one.
It has a redesigned three-part grille with projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights, while the rest of the vehicle features a familiar silhouette.
At the back, it boasts “Eagle Beak” tail lamps – and 15-inch Flex wheels are provided as standard.
Seven-seater interior
The biggest selling point for the Triber is not its SUV characteristics, but rather its seating capabilities.
The vehicle features “ultra-modular seating”, which allows the owner to use it in two, four, five, and seven-seater configurations.
Clever storage pockets in the cabin also allow up to 31 litres of stuff to be stored throughout the interior, while the tall rear opens to 625 litres of cargo capacity – in five-seater mode.
Connectivity is taken care of through an 8-inch touchscreen MediaNav Evolution infotainment system that supports Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, hands-free calling, and vehicle applications.
Six speakers provide the audio experience, and aux and USB ports allow additional points of connectivity.
The top-end model also comes with a rear-view camera, all-round electric windows, and a manual air-conditioning system that has dedicated vents for the second and third rows of seating.
In addition, it is fitted with a multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry, a multi-information display in the instrument cluster, and several 12V outlets scattered around the interior.
In terms of safety, however, the list is a bit shorter.
It has ABS with electronic brake force distribution, seat belts, front airbags, rear parking sensors, and speed-sensing door locks with impact-sensing unlock.
1.0-litre performance
Powering the Triber is a 999cc, naturally-aspirated, three-cylinder engine delivering 52kW and 96Nm of torque.
The top-end trim comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission and combined fuel consumption is rated at 5.5l/100km.
Even though this MPV has low power output levels, it only weighs 957kg – which allows it a top speed of around 140km/h.
Price
The new Renault Triber 1.0 Prestige Auto has a South African price of R221,900.
Each model is sold with a 5-year/150,000km mechanical warranty and a 2-year/30,000km service plan; and each buyer will have a choice between five exterior colours when buying their Triber.
