The Renault Megane is being discontinued in the South African market, the company has confirmed to TopAuto.
TopAuto recently spoke to a Renault agent online, and was told that the Megane would no longer be sold as a new model from Renault dealerships.
The change is recent, as the Megane R.S 300 Trophy page is still available on the Renault South Africa webpage.
No other Megane model is listed, however.
We reached out to Renault South Africa to confirm the news and to ask for comment on the matter.
The reason of the move is due to the rise in popularity of SUVs.
“Some brands are moving away from C-Hatch to B-SUV globally as the C-Hatch segment is declining in the local market, and the B-SUV segment is growing,” said Renault.
This is regrettable, but not completely unexpected, as other cars such as the VW Arteon suffered the same fate not long ago.
The Renault Megane is an impressive hatchback with attractive styling and power to match.
It was seen on our roads from the 2000s, and enjoyed good sales and a growing fanbase over the years.
The Megane sold 34,747 units during its lifetime in South Africa, according to Renault.
This speaks to the immense growth that the SUV segment experienced and cements the fact that they are here to stay.
