Tata Motors recently introduced the Tata Punch micro-SUV and the sub-4m SUV is one of the best-selling cars in the country. However, the Nissan Magnite is also a very popular SUV and helped Nissan gain back some traction in the Indian automobile market. Design
The Tata Punch and the Nissan Magnite couldn’t be more different design-wise, while one is a bold-looking micro-SUV, the other is a very stylish and sharp looking compact SUV.
Starting with the newer car here, the Tata Punch looks bold despite its relatively smaller footprint and the overall design of the Tata Punch looks more rugged, all thanks to its upright stance and all-around back claddings.
On the other hand, the Nissan Magnite looks quite contemporary and stylish with its slim LED headlamps and ‘J’ shaped LED DRLs and looks very well proportioned. The Nissan Magnite measures 3,994mm long, 1,758mm wide and 1,572mm tall. As a result, the Nissan Magnite offers a roomy interior and comes with a large enough 336-litre boot.
According to Nissan, the boot space can be further increased to 690-litres by folding the 60:40 split rear seats.
However, despite even more compact dimensions at 3,827mm long, 1,742 mm wide and 1,615 mm tall, Tata Motors is offering the Tata Punch with 25 utility spaces in the cabin and a larger 366-litre boot.
Both the Nissan Magnite and the Tata Punch are safe SUVs. However, Tata Punch comes out on the top with a 5-star safety rating from Global-NCAP. Whereas, the Nissan Magnite scores a respectable 4-star from ASEAN-NCAP.
Powertrain
The Nissan Magnite SUV can be optioned with two engine options. The base engine is a 72bhp 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with 96Nm of torque. While this engine may seem underpowered for an SUV, the light kerb weight of the Nissan Magnite ensures decent performance.
The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine on the other hand produces 98.6bhp and 160Nm of torque (152Nm of torque in CVT gearbox variant). Gearbox options include 5-speed manual transmission or a silky-smooth CVT.
As of now, the sole engine available in the Tata Punch is the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated Revotron petrol engine. This engine makes 84.48bhp and 113Nm of torque.
This engine is either mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT).
Price
Prices for the Tata Punch starts from Rs 5.64 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base 1.2-litre petrol model, whereas the top-of-the-line model equipped with automatic transmission is priced at Rs 9.28lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Whereas the prices for the Nissan Magnite starts from Rs 5.76 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base petrol variant and goes up to Rs 9.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top-end XV Premium trim level equipped with a CVT gearbox.
Thoughts About Tata Punch & Nissan Magnite
Both the Tata Punch and Nissan Magnite offer tremendous value for money. However, the Nissan Magnite offers a bit more interior space and features for a bit more extra money. On the other hand, the Tata Punch offers a bit more safety with a 5-star safety rating from Global-NCAP. So at the end of the day, your choice boils down to your priorities.
