The Renault 4 is 60 years old and has seen a lot in its life. For the anniversary it is even allowed to go into the air.
They sent him into the desert and into the fields to work. In addition, he has accompanied generations through everyday automotive life and has become a car legend himself. For his 60th birthday, they are now even blowing him up – the one Renault R4.
Tomorrow’s R4 will fly
“At the end of the anniversary year (2021) we wanted to create something unconventional to celebrate the 60th birthday of the 4L,” explains Arnaud Belloni, Global Marketing Director of the Renault brand. “The collaboration with the design center TheArsenale was a logical step. The flying AIR4 study is groundbreaking and a winking outlook on what the icon could look like in another 60 years.”
The only thing the AIR4 has in common with the R4 is the basic shape of the cabin. In all other points he leaves the past behind. Basically, the AIR4 is a quadrocopter in the R4 look. The small car body was modeled from carbon. Below is a stable but light chassis with four long arms that accommodate the rotors. The four purely electrically powered double propellers at the corners of the vehicle enclose the centrally positioned cabin. The “driver” gains access to the interior by lifting the entire cockpit fixed at the front.
