RAM’s battery-powered pick-up will be available to Aussies – eventually
The battery-electric 2024 RAM 1500 REV full-size pick-up has been confirmed for conversion and release in Australia.
While no firm timeline is yet on the table, the head of the RAM brand globally, Mike Koval, told carsales the RAM 1500 REV was locked in for local sales and that supply was assured for Aussie buyers.
Already a sell-out success, the RAM 1500 REV made its formal debut at the New York International Auto Show overnight, where its astonishing performance figures were released.
RAM's all-new electric ute is coming to Australia
Powered by twin 250kW electric motors and boasting up to 800km of range from a massive 229kWh battery pack, the new RAM 1500 REV is claimed to accelerate to 60mph [97km/h] in 4.4sec. It has a payload of 1200kg and in the USA is rated to tow up to 6300kg.
Koval told carsales RAM’s desire was to sell the 1500 REV globally. He stated Australia was a key market for the brand and the REV in particular.
“Ultimately, yes [RAM will sell the 1500 REV in Australia],” Koval stated.
“We appreciate everything that the team in Australia and New Zealand [has done] – they’ve been fantastic partners for us. And you see the numbers – we’re growing leaps and bounds year after year.”
Expect top-spec models to arrive in Australia first
Nonetheless, Koval was coy on how many REVs will be made available to local buyers.
“We haven’t given any, uh, final production numbers quite yet. [But] As we get closer to actual SOP [start of production], which is fourth quarter of next year, we’ll start to offer allocations by region.”
The initial production run of the RAM 1500 REV was sold out within 72 hours of the vehicle’s announcement at the Consumer Electronic Show in January.
Koval confirmed that at initial production rates, the unspecified initial order take accounted for more than 12 months of production. At the New York show, however, RAM announced it was increasing production and re-opened orders – at least to US customers.
When asked whether the brand would ‘ring fence’ production for Australia, Koval replied “Absolutely. Cars for that region? Absolutely.
“We are a global brand more than ever. Historically, RAM brand sales have been predominantly in North America. Not anymore. If you look at the numbers of South America, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand… this is all about global growth…
“There may be a staggered approach [to market release of the REV], but it’ll be very close.
“I’m not excluding anybody out of the gate,” Koval stated.
