Late July global debut for all-new ute locked in ahead of local launch in the next six to nine months
The new-generation 2024 Mitsubishi Triton will make its global debut in Thailand on July 26, according to an official invite sent to media outlets including carsales.
The world premiere of the replacement for Australia’s fourth most popular ute (behind the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-MAX) will take place in Bangkok – the same place the vehicle that previewed it, the Mitsubishi XRT Concept, was revealed in back in March.
Alongside Australia, Thailand is one of the world’s biggest ute markets and where the new Triton will be manufactured, which is why the majority of spy images have been captured there.
The new model will ride on an all-new ladder-frame chassis that was developed by Mitsubishi and will also underpin the next Nissan Navara, while power and torque will be delivered by a new four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine tipped to develop around 150kW/500Nm.
There’s been no indication whether it will be an all-new power unit or an upgraded version of the current 2.4-litre engine, but it should allow Mitsubishi to finally up the Triton’s braked towing capacity to match the 3500kg limit of its key rivals.
As well as being bigger, the new model’s extra muscle will also be reflected in its design – previewed by the XRT Concept – making it bolder and more imposing than any of its forebears, including the swansong Triton Xtreme developed and produced locally by Walkinshaw Automotive.
Mitsubishi executives recently confirmed a battery-electric version of the Triton would be on sale globally by 2028 and that plans for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version were being reviewed in the wake of increasing fleet demands for EVs.
Australia is the world’s second-biggest market for the Triton after Thailand, which explains why a good deal of its development was carried out here, even if local snappers never got to see the covert prototypes.
Australian input will undoubtedly help the new Triton in its quest to rattle the cages of both the Ranger and HiLux, in terms of both sales and its driving experience across all terrains and environments.
The new model is expected to be released Down Under very late this year or, more likely, early 2024.
