Next-generation pick-up locked and loaded for its world debut on July 26
It’s official: the all-new 2023 Mitsubishi Triton will indeed make its global premiere in Bangkok, Thailand on July 26 – just as we reported last week.
The confirmation was made today by Mitsubishi, which simultaneously released a quartet of new teaser images previewing the next-generation ute’s macho new look and bigger dimensions, as evidenced by its bold front-end design and character lines down the sides of the body.
The front of the new Triton – which will replace Australia’s fourth most popular ute behind the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-MAX by early next year – is ruled by a chunky set of cheeks accentuated by tri-beam LED running lights and an array of lines, creases and contours.
Between said cheeks is a butch new square-shaped grille crowned by an unmissable triple-diamond logo below block capital ‘MITSUBISHI’ lettering.
Combined with extended wheel-arches, a contrasting skid plate, large wheels and integrated sports bars, this suggest the vehicle teased here will be some sort of launch flagship – but not the long-theorised Triton Ralliart.
Odds are this is a GSR or equivalent variant aimed at those in the market for a highly-specified dual-cab 4×4 ute without stepping up to the tough-truck hero, which will probably be revealed separately further down the line.
Viewed from the side, the cabin of the all-new dual-cab is obviously longer and squarer than previous Triton generations, which in tandem with the clear increase in width should do wonders for second-row accommodation.
Meantime, the shorter rear overhang – long a hangup of previous Tritons – should do similar for the ute’s payload and off-road capabilities.
At the rear, there’s an all-new rear lighting signature and, on this particular vehicle, a roller cover – further solidifying this vehicle’s identity as the new Triton flagship (at least initially) – and what looks like an integrated tailgate lip spoiler.
Mitsubishi Australia is yet to officially lock in an Australian launch date for the all-new Triton, but has promised more details in the wake of next month’s world debut.
“Australia is a core market globally for Mitsubishi Motors and we have been a key stakeholder in the next-generation Triton’s development process,” it said in a statement.
“The light commercial utility segment is more competitive than ever, and we are confident that next-generation Triton will take Mitsubishi’s enduring presence in this market to the next level.
“We look forward to sharing more details of the development process, and of the new Triton’s Australian range, specification, timings and pricing as we move towards delivering this next-generation utility vehicle to Australian customers.”
Australia’s position as the Triton’s biggest market outside of Thailand has led to a large proportion of the new model’s development being carried out Down Under, in an effort to make it as suitable as possible to local conditions and market requirements, which will be critical to stealing sales from the dominant HiLux and the locally-developed Ranger.
Apart from being bigger and bolder, the new Triton – which will also form the basis of the next Nissan Navara and perhaps battery-electric versions of both utes – is expected to be higher-tech, more powerful and more competitive when it comes to payload and towing capacity.
