In July 2021, the fourth-gen Nissan X-Trail received the green signal for launch in European markets. Unlike the American model, it was announced with the e-Power series-hybrid powertrain.
Specifications
The 2022 Nissan X-Trail e-Power specifications aren’t announced, but safely assume that it employs the second-generation of the Japanese automaker’s acclaimed series-hybrid electric powertrain. Introduced in the third-gen Nissan Note and also available in the new Nissan Qashqai, the revised e-Power system has an all-new electric motor and inverter for higher efficiency.
The benefits of the e-Power system are superior fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared to a normal gasoline engine. Pictured is the regular X-Trail (Chinese spec). Image Source: Nissan
The second-gen e-Power system’s motor generates 10% higher torque and 6% higher power, which should allow better acceleration, while the new inverter is 40% smaller and 30% lighter. The engine responsible for charging the battery is the MR15 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline unit. The final power and torque available in the smaller Qashqai e-Power are 140 kW (190 PS/187 bhp) and 330 Nm (243 lb.-ft.), respectively. Expect outputs to be slightly different in the X-Trail e-Power.

All-wheel drive
While the Qashqai e-Power is an FWD, the X-Trail e-Power will come in AWD as well, as per Best Car. The X-Trail e-Power AWD variant may have a second electric motor to power the rear wheels, as is the case with the Note e-Power AWD.
According to a more recent report from creative311.com, the X-Trail e-Power will come in FWD and AWD variants. We don’t concur with the article claiming that Nissan may give the latter the Ariya AWD’s ‘e-4ORCE’ branding. It is worth noting that the company introduced the Note e-Power AWD after the Ariya, yet didn’t use the e-4ORCE branding. Both variants would have a 1.5-liter VC turbo three-cylinder gasoline engine. The latter should sport an additional electric motor powering the rear wheels.
Grades
According to creative311.com, Nissan plans to launch the X-Trail e-Power in Japan in two custom variants: Autech and Extrymer X. The normal variant would be available in S, X, and G grades.
The S grade will feature a 7-inch color digital instrument cluster, while the X and G grades would have a 12.3-inch full-color instrument cluster. A dealer-level optional infotainment system with navigation will be available for the S and X grades. Moreover, Nissan will offer a factory-fitted 12.3-inch Nissan Connect touchscreen infotainment system option for the X grade. As for the G grade, the company will equip it with the 12.3-inch Nissan Connect touchscreen infotainment system as standard.
The Autech variant would have a sportier styling and be available in 5-seat FWD and 7-seat AWD configurations. The Extremer X variant will be extra-rugged for more off-road capability and be available in 5-seat e-Force (AWD) and 7-seat e-Force (AWD) configurations. This variant will be based on an X grade of the normal variant.
Release Date
As per Nissan’s announcement from last year, sales of the 2022 Nissan X-Trail e-Power in Europe will begin in the summer of 2022. In Japan, according to the creative311.com report, the X-Trail e-Power AWD will arrive around the end of July 2022 and the X-Trail e-Power 2WD will follow around September 2022.
Nissan Qashqai e-Power part of the Ambition 2030 strategy
Nissan held an ‘Innovation Walk’ monthly event at the Nissan Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama, Japan. Visitors here experienced the history of Nissan, saw its electrification journey, and its vision of the future of electrification. A video on YouTube channel Car Inside Impression Channel (ba5cchihonda) shares a walkthrough of the event. It shows a new-generation X-Trail on display. In the display model’s description, Nissan says that it plans to launch six e-Power models, including the X-Trail e-Power, in China by 2025.
As part of its new Ambition 2030 strategy, Nissan will introduce 20 new EV and e-Power models globally in the next five years. By FY2030, the Japanese automaker will introduce 23 new electrified models, including 15 EVs. The company aims to increase the share of electrified models in its sales to more than 75% in Europe, more than 55% in Japan, and more than 40% in China by FY2026. In the U.S., it wants to convert 40% of its sales to EVs by FY2030.
We’ll update this page with the first photos and confirmed specifications of the all-new X-Trail hybrid as soon as Nissan releases them.
