Morgan Motor Company has appointed Matthew Hole as Chief Technical Officer and the newly created role of Head of Electrification.
Morgan, of course, is typically seen as more reminiscent of times past, producing its retro-styled sports cars and, until recently, even using wood in its chassis.
However, the company has said that Hole’s appointment is “strategically crucial” in its “ongoing transition towards electrification and future electric vehicles.”
Hole joins the venerable Malvern-based marque after more than a decade at Drive System Design, a company that specialised in electric drive systems.
“I am relishing the opportunity to help transition Morgan Motor Company towards an electric future, at what is a hugely exciting point in the marque’s 112-year history,” says Hole.
“Morgan has a tradition of innovation and has remained true to its core values for generations, and I am confident that these values can be strengthened as we implement EV technology. As an engineer, it’s a fascinating challenge that carries a significant weight of responsibility, not least because of the significance of the Morgan brand.”
Morgan, despite the anachronistic appearance of many of its cars such as the Plus Four and Plus Six, has experimented with electrification in the past. Back in 2018, the company aimed at producing electrified versions of its dinky Three-Wheeler sports car, the EV3 (if, of course, three-wheelers are technically cars).
The unrealised Morgan EV3 concept
While the EV3 sadly never made it to production, the ambition was clearly there. Hole’s first job will surely be to fulfil that ambition.
“We are delighted to welcome Matthew to the Morgan family, joining us as Chief Technical Officer. Matthew will lead our energised and passionate team of engineers and designers who are already hard at work developing future Morgan sports cars. Electrification is a vital milestone – and one that presents opportunity for Morgan,” says Steve Morris, Morgan’s Chairman and CEO.
“I firmly believe that an electric Morgan that remains handcrafted, bespoke and — most importantly — exciting to drive represents a compelling offer in our ever-changing industry and something that we look forward to embracing.”
