After introducing more affordable RWD variants of the Thar two months ago, Mahindra is now reportedly gearing up to launch a new entry-level 4×4 variant in its off-roader’s range. This new variant is said to be available in petrol and diesel engine options. Currently, Mahindra offers the Thar in two primary trim levels: AX (O) and LX.
Mahindra Thar 4×4 new variant: Highlights
A recently leaked document has disclosed that the Thar 4×4 is likely to be offered in a new base-spec variant that is expected to be called AX AC. This new trim level will sit below the AX (O). As a result, the upcoming Thar 4×4 AX AC could ditch some features available in the AX (O).
Mahindra Thar 4×4 new variant: Powertrain
It is believed that the upcoming base-spec Thar 4×4 could be powered by the same 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel units as the AX (O) and LX trim levels. The former makes 150PS and 320Nm of torque, while the latter produces 130PS and 300Nm of torque. These motors come mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Meanwhile, the entry-level Thar RWD gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine generating 118PS and 300Nm of torque and is only paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Mahindra Thar 4×4 new variant: Prices
The prices of the on-sale Thar start from Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and go up to Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Thar 4×4 AX AC entry-level variant may cost about Rs 12.50 lakh.
