Mahindra South Africa achieved a new sales record in the first quarter of 2022, putting the car manufacturer on track as one of the fastest-growing vehicle brands in the country.
The brand sold over 1,000 units per month since the start of the year, resulting in a total sales figure of 3,306 vehicles sold this last quarter.
Combined with a successful fourth quarter at the end of 2021, Mahindra ended its financial year on a high note as one of South Africa’s most rapidly growing volume brands, said the manufacturer.
Mahindra in 2021
Within the past financial year covering April 2021 to March 2022, Mahindra sold 8,525 units, marking a 37.4% increase in sales over the previous year.
“While Mahindra has grown significantly since establishing an office in South Africa in 2004, we have really picked up momentum in the last five years,” said Mahindra South Africa CEO Rajesh Gupta.
“And despite the COVID-related disruptions and nagging stock shortages, we have outpaced the overall vehicle market ever since.”
While all of Mahindra’s product ranges have been performing well, it’s the bakkies that are growing well ahead of market, according to Gupta.
At the end of March 2022, Mahindra sold 6,070 Pik-Up and Bolero models, which is a 63% increase from the previous period.
This puts Mahindra in the top three brands in South Africa for light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales, with their single cab and double cab variants doing equally well, said Gupta.
The brand attributes much of its success within the last five years to its heavy investment in the South African market, establishing a vehicle assembly plant in Durban in 2018 to produce the Pik-Up for local and regional markets.
Additionally, Mahindra established a new parts warehouse in Gauteng to support its growing dealer network of both new and pre-owned models.
The manufacturer also expanded its range to include its tractor and farm equipment offerings for the local agricultural sector, as Mahindra is the world’s largest tractor brand by sales, it said.
Later this year consumers can expect the upcoming XUV700 and the new Scorpio, which Mahindra promises will “introduce a new level of luxury and technology for our customers and South African motorists in general.”
