Mahindra electric vehicles have covered over 400 million kilometres so far, according to a statement revealed by the brand. Mahindra also claims that its vehicles running a distance of 400 million kilometres is equivalent to saving over 40,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. This is a huge achievement indeed.
Mahindra was the first major automotive manufacturer to introduce electric vehicles. Its EV journey started way back in 2010 when Mahindra bought a controlling stake in Reva, which was an electric car manufacturing brand. The company was then rebranded as Mahindra Electric Mobility Limited, in 2016.
Mahindra Electric’s first EV – the e20 – was launched back in 2013 and since then, there has been no turning back. Multiple Mahindra electric vehicles were launched. Some of these electric vehicles like the eVerito and e2o were made available for private ownership while the commercial EV business just took off with its two electric three-wheelers.
Mahindra Electric launched the Treo and Treo Yaari electric three-wheelers. These EVs turned into instant success stories, especially in many Tier II and Tier III cities and some small towns as well. These three-wheelers have been plying every single day, allowing its operators to save a lot of money that would otherwise go into fuel.
All of these vehicles put together have brought Mahindra Electric to this major milestone of having completed 400 million EV kilometres. This, as you would imagine, should have done wonders in helping the environment.
Mahindra Electric also works closely with Mahindra Racing, which has a rather successful Formula E team. While the kilometres clocked by the Formula E race car have not been taken into consideration in the 400 million kilometres, it certainly helps Mahindra with the development of more EVs.
Speaking of more EVs, Mahindra seems to be on course to become the largest EV manufacturer in India with multiple electric vehicles in the pipeline. In 2021, Mahindra revealed that it earmarked Rs 3,000 crore for the development of electric vehicles. The brand also announced the launch of 16 new electric vehicles before the end of the decade.
Of the 16 electric vehicles announced, eight would be electric SUVs. Among the eight SUVs, four would be existing SUVs that will transition into electric vehicles. The other four will be brand new products. In order to indicate that the electric SUVs are on schedule, Mahindra recently released a teaser that showcased four electric SUVs of different proportions and these SUVs would slot into different segments.
The first of the electric SUVs will be the eXUV300. It is one of the four SUVs that will make the transition into being an EV. It will look exactly like the XUV300 as we know it but will feature a futuristic electric drivetrain. The Mahindra eXUV300 is expected to be launched towards the end of 2023.
