The all-electric Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is so popular in South Africa that it is sold out until June 2022.
In May 2021, the first 15 units of the SUV sold out at a price of R1.2 million each, with these expected to be delivered to their owners before the end of the year.
Volvo has now updated its online store – which is the main channel to buy an electric XC40 – to show that the next batch of units will only be available after June 2022.
“We have experienced huge demand for this new vehicle, which is essentially sold out until June 2022,” Volvo South Africa told TopAuto.
“Hence, any customers placing orders now will only receive their vehicles after June 2022. The wording on the Volvo online store is there to alert customers to the waiting period on orders placed now.”
XC40 P8 Specs
Unlike the petrol and diesel-powered Volvo XC40, the P8 Recharge will only be sold in one trim and with one powertrain option in South Africa.
The electric SUV enjoys a high level of standard equipment – including a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch infotainment display, a Harman/Kardon sound system, road-sign recognition, and blind-spot assist.
It also supports Google digital services, which brings Google Maps, Google voice assistant, and “a broad offer of native in-car apps via Google Play.”
Powering the compact SUV is a 78kWh battery connected to two electric motors that drive both the front and rear wheels.
The configuration produces 300kW and 660Nm, allowing this Volvo to reach 100km/h in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 180km/h.
In terms of range, the XC40 P8 offers a maximum of 418km on a single charge – and can be charged to 80% in 40 minutes when a 150kW DC fast-charging plug is connected.
With a Volvo-approved wallbox charger that provides up to 60km of range per hour of charging, you can expect the XC40 P8 to be fully juiced in roughly seven hours when plugged in at home.
Each purchase of a Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge includes a 5-year warranty and maintenance plan, three years of insurance, use of a petrol car for two weeks per year for three years, and a home charger with cables.
Volvo is also on a campaign to install charging stations at its dealerships and aims to have one installed at every location before the end of 2021.
