Smartphone screen mirroring is possible in the new Jeep Gladiator through the use of a USB cable connected to the data port in the centre console. The Uconnect 4 system doesn't support wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but will still allow you to use approved in-car apps with a physical connection.
The infotainment system has become a critical part of most cars sold today. Not only does it serve as a central command centre for many of the vehicle’s various settings and functions, it assumes the duty of keeping us informed and entertained on those longer journeys. The native infotainment system is required to carry out these responsibilities and tries to do it in a way that is simple and intuitive all while providing as many features as it possibly can. This was a constant struggle for software engineers until smartphone tethering arrived on the scene.
Smartphone tethering allows for your mobile phone’s screen to be replicated on the infotainment screen. While not identical, for obvious reasons, it provides a look and feel that is familiar and displays a number of your apps on the car’s screen. This allows you to stay connected, be it through your text messages, your phonebook, or even Whatsapp, helping minimise distraction while driving and preventing the need to check your phone. This activity is extremely dangerous when driving.
It also allows you to access certain services, such as maps and navigation with the same search results that live in your phone’s history, being passed onto the onboard display. The convenience of this feature alone is worth its weight. A simple search for the destination on your phone, from the comfort of your lounge and WiFi, and when you climb into the car, presto! Your search is displayed on the screen without you having to type the address in again.
Jeep Gladiator iPhone Connectivity
The Jeep Gladiator is fitted with the Uconnect 4 system which supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It does not support wireless connection for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay but you will be able to activate and access CarPlay by using a USB cable with one end plugged into your phone, and the other into the data port of your Gladiator.
Under the Media flap, below your air conditioning controls and next to your electric window switches, you will find the USB port for connecting your phone. It’s always best to use a genuine Apple cable and ensure that you are stopped and in Park when you first connect, as you will be required to follow the prompts on your phone to allow access to your device.
Bluetooth
Should you wish to forego the CarPlay connection, you can still connect your phone via Bluetooth. This will allow for audio streaming as well as hands-free telephony, allowing you to access your phone book and use the voice assistant to make calls.
Here’s how you connect the Bluetooth:
1. Activate Bluetooth on your phone and ensure the vehicle is stopped and in Park.
2. On the Jeep Gladiator Uconnect screen, press the phone button, followed by ‘Add Device’.
3. Tap settings and check your phone for new devices found. Select the Jeep option.
4. The devices will begin pairing and monitor both screens for the PIN number, ensuring that they match.
5. Your device is now connected and you will be able to select BT Music to access your phone’s playlist.
