The number of used cars sold in South Africa this past August grew by a considerable 12% month-on-month, going from 30,978 units in July to a new total of 34,725 units.
This is according to AutoTrader’s latest car sales data, which states that the pre-owned industry’s cumulative value has now reached R14 billion thanks to a year-on-year growth of 10.5%.
August’s impressive performance occurred during a month in which new car sales saw a noticeable dip, which AutoTrader CEO George Mienie attributes to the better value-for-money proposition offered by pre-owned options.
Top performers
The surprising hit of the month was the Jeep Wrangler, which saw a staggering 111.65% jump in used sales.
This was enough to put it on the list of the top 10 best-selling vehicles, taking the eighth spot and knocking the Ford EcoSport and Nissan NP200 (two consistent performers) down a peg.
Another surprising fact is that Suzuki did not appear in the top 10 in August, despite the fact that it is one of South Africa’s five best-selling brands in the new vehicle market.
Toyota was as usual the favourite pick overall, selling five times as many vehicles as the company in 10th place, Kia, according to AutoTrader.
VW and Ford proved to be the second and third most-sold brands, respectively, which were followed by the more high-end BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which rounded out the top five.
Hyundai, Nissan, Renault, and Kia, were all popular choices last month, too, as was Audi, which managed to break into the top 10 to join its German counterparts.
In terms of sales growth; VW, BMW, and Ford were the biggest winners with month-on-month increases of 19.78%, 19.05%, and 14.68%, respectively, while Hyundai, Nissan, and Renault saw the largest dip in sales.
What’s popular
As for the most popular models, the average used car sold in South Africa in August went for R403,203, was registered in 2018, and had 78,509km on the clock.
The Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux took first and second place, and they were followed by the hatchback siblings of the VW Polo and Polo Vivo.
Firm favourites like the Toyota Fortuner, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and BMW 3 Series continued to do well, but these were joined last month by the aforementioned Jeep Wrangler, which managed to beat out other nameplates that have featured on the top-sellers list like the VW Golf, Ford Fiesta, and BMW 1 Series.
The Ford EcoSport managed to stay in the top 10, as did the Nissan NP200, the latter of which happens to be the cheapest model in August’s top 10 with an average selling point of R161,060.
