Co-host of All Girls Garage and owner and founder of Girl Gang Garage Bogi Lateiner is asking for your help! In an effort to encourage women to learn the automotive trades, Bogi has partnered up with car painter Connie Manjavinos, Volvo, and BASF for the third Girl Gang Garage build—the Iron Maven. Where do you come in? Bogi and the Girl Gang Garage crew want you to choose the color of the 1961 Volvo PV544 restomod they’re building for SEMA Show 2022.
The Girl Gang Garage build celebrates Volvo’s past and future by combining the classic looks of the 1961 PV544 body with the running gear and powertrain from a 2021 Volvo S60 T8 Recharge Polestar Engineered sedan. That’s 415 horsepower of hybrid fury going into the third and most comprehensive car build from Girl Gang Garage to date, with over 150 women from all over the world participating in the build.
With the help of car painter and founder of Girls Behind the Gun Connie Manjavinos and BASF, Bogi and the Girl Gang Garage have created three paint colors for voters to choose from that all pay homage to the history of Volvo and look to the Swedish automaker’s future. The color choices are:
- Rebelberry: a modern interpretation of several purple tones available on heritage Volvo products throughout the years.
- Resilient Gray: inspired by the array of gray exterior paint colors available on current Volvo luxury cars and SUVs.
- She is Sage: a light green color playing off the Sage Green paint unique to Volvo Cars’ first pure electric vehicle, the XC40 Recharge.
To vote for your favorite color in the Iron Maven Color Contest, go to GirlGangGarage.com. Once the color is selected, all progress posts on social media of the Iron Maven Volvo PV544 will be exclusively in black and white, until the Volvo restomod is unveiled on November 1, 2022 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, ahead of SEMA Show 2022. Voting closes in early August, check out the YouTube Video on Bogi’s Garage to see the three color choices while you still have time.
“This unique and ambitious project is a celebration of past, present and future,” said Bogi Lateiner. “The Iron Maven celebrates Volvo’s heritage while integrating its present technology, celebrates women in trades while welcoming new women into the fold, and honors the heritage of car building while integrating modern technology such as 3D printing. It’s been a pleasure leading this project that means so much for so many. “
Started in 2021 with a barn find PV544 from Phoenix, Ariz., the Iron Maven is part of Volvo’s larger initiative to call attention to the need for more women in the skilled automotive trades and recruit female service technicians into its retail service network. With help from the Volvo Cars Technical Support team, the Girl Gang Garage crew will integrate the Drive-E drivetrain, Polestar Engineered suspension, and Sensus infotainment system from the S60 into the modest and analogue body of the PV544. Bogi and her all-female build team will employ traditional hand-fabrication techniques as well as utilizing 3D printed parts to bring together the forward-looking elements and classic essence of the Iron Maven.
