In this article:
Is the Renault Captur a good car?
The Renault Captur was introduced in 2015 and immediately drew attention because of its friendly, practical crossover nature. The first generation has since been discontinued and we patiently await the release of the second generation model, rumoured to be going on sale later in 2022.
Who is the Renault Captur a good car for?
If you’re looking to upgrade from your hatchback and climb into something with a little more room, raised ride height, improved visibility and SUV-like proportions, the Captur will be just what you need. Despite all these attributes, it remains compact enough to be able to use on a daily basis and is easy to park.
Is the Renault Captur a good first car?
The Renault Captur makes a great first car. The improved visibility and sensible wheel and tyre combinations make for a smooth ride where you don’t have to worry too much about the potholes and road imperfections. The controls are light and the running costs are relatively low too.
Is the Renault Captur a good family car?
If you have a small family, the Renault Captur will work for you but if you’re on the larger side or have more than two children (or older children) you may be wanting something a little bigger.
Is there a Hybrid Renault Captur?
When the Captur was new you had the choice of either a petrol engine or a diesel one and there was no hybrid or electric version. The second generation model is available overseas with a hybrid drivetrain but it’s yet to be seen if South Africa will get this model.

What’s it like to drive?
Reviewer’s opinion
“The Captur’s pliant suspension and chunkier 55-profile tyres are ideal for our poorly maintained roads, and the Captur hardly noticed the severe speed-bumps en route to school. Its hatchback underpinnings are evident in its secure handling over mountain passes, but a touch of body roll combined with vague-ish steering remind you of its raised height and off-road aspirations. The Captur isn’t meant to be driven like a hot hatch, and is more about the journey than the destination. “

Exterior
Interior
What is the Renault Captur like inside?
The Renault Captur interior is more than agreeable but expect to find a lot of plastic used in the construction. The dashboard is dominated by a large, hexagonal fascia that houses the infotainment screen, HVAC controls and is trimmed in a silver garnish to help break the potential monotony in the cabin. The seats are cloth covered but provide adequate support and are surprisingly comfortable too.
Style
Borrowing heavily from the Clio of the same generation, the Captur combined the compact nature of the Clio with the styling elements of the Kadjar, an attractive compact SUV that has also since been discontinued. Black cladding on the lower sections of the doors, broken only by a small piece of brightwork, helps lend off-road credence to the design while the overall shape remains soft, rounded and follows a typical two-box design with short overhangs.
