The Jeep Gladiator is the latest entrant into the double cab leisure market and offers active lifestylers the opportunity to express themselves and enjoy the outdoors in ways never before possible.
In this article:
Is the Jeep Gladiator a good car?
The Jeep Gladiator offers the flexibility and versatility that the Jeep brand has become known for. Now, the removable roof, removable doors, fold-down windscreen, and Trail Rated 4×4 capabilities are joined by a convenient and handy load bin for karting your leisure vehicles or equipment around in.
Who is the Jeep Gladiator a good car for?
If you subscribe to that active lifestyle and are looking for a new way to arrive at the motocross track, dam, or outdoor venue, the Gladiator is for you. Anyone who enjoys the outdoors will revel in what the Jeep Gladiator has to offer and for those that don’t, it will still make a statement.
Is the Jeep Gladiator a good first car?
We wouldn’t recommend the Gladiator as a first car. While easy enough to drive with its 8-speed automatic gearbox and high-definition reverse camera and safety systems, the sheer size of the Gladiator makes it more difficult to position on the road and park.
Is the Jeep Gladiator a good family car?
Families will love the Gladiator. It features a full rear seat set with a 60/40 split system that exposes the removable Bluetooth speaker when folded forward or handy storage solutions when folded up.
Is there a Hybrid Jeep Gladiator?
The Gladiator is only available in South Africa with the 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine and no hybrid options are available.

What’s it like to drive?
Reviewer’s opinion
“The tough obstacles of the Hennops Off-Road park allowed us to test this out and a myriad of axle-busters, inclines and declines saw the Gladiator revel in the challenge. The low-down torque of the Pentastar V6 and low-range crawl feature allowed the rather large Gladiator to tuck its wheels and rumble up and over all the obstacles on our route.”

Interior
What is the Jeep Gladiator like inside?
Inside the Jeep Gladiator you will find a nod to the Jeeps of yore with string horizontal lines and trapezoidal elements that tie together to offer a rugged-looking interior. Plush leather upholstery and soft-touch surfaces await but we find the centre fascia to be rather cluttered and filled with far too many buttons. Everything from the audio, HVAC and climate controls and even the drive controls are located in this area, making it fiddly to use while on the move. The Gladiator does come with a multifunction steering wheel and uConnect infotainment system that is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay equipped.
Style
The exterior also pays homage to the models preceding it and the front end mimics that of the Wrangler with a traditional 7-slat grille, round 7-inch headlights and box arches. The Gladiator is a long vehicle and measures in at just under 5.6-metres. It’s boxy and purposeful and has an impressive approach angle of over 43-degrees.
Tech features
- 8.4-inch uConnect infotainment system
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Adaptive cruise control
