The Scorpio is very capable and it went up against the XUV700, which is the most powerful car in the segment?
The XUV700 is hands-down the most sophisticated product Mahindra has ever come up with to date. This new-age SUV replaced the ageing XUV500 and it is better in every single aspect. While the new-age Mahindra XUV700 has the attention of the market, one can’t deny the immense popularity Mahindra Scorpio enjoys in the smaller towns and rural areas. Despite being the older SUV, the Scorpio still is an immensely desirable SUV for its macho image and durability.
The question then arises – which one of the two SUVs here, Mahindra Scorpio and Mahindra XUV700, offers a better outright power? A YouTube channel named ’Yagya Sharma’ tried to answer this question through a tug of war competition in one of the videos.
The Contenders
Both the SUVs here come from the house of Mahindra, but they have entirely different approaches in their styling and mechanicals under their skin. The Mahindra Scorpio is an old-school, rugged product. It is based on a ladder-on-frame chassis and is a rear-wheel-drive SUV. Mahindra Scorpio gets a 2.2-litre mHawk four-cylinder diesel engine as standard, which produces 140 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque and is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
This the petrol variant of the XUV700, which generates 200 PS of maximum power!
The Mahindra XUV700, on the other hand, is a new-age monocoque SUV with a front-wheel-drive configuration and an optional AWD system. While it is available with a 2.2-litre diesel engine as well, the version used in the tug of war event here gets a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.0-litre mStallion engine produces 200 PS of power and 380 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful vehicle in the segment.
The Mahindra XUV700 might seem like a clear winner with much higher power and torque outputs on paper.
Mahindra Scorpio vs Mahindra XUV700: Tug-of-war
Which of these two is more capable?
The video shows two rounds of tug of war between the diesel-manual Mahindra Scorpio RWD and the petrol-automatic Mahindra XUV700 FWD. The towing hooks on the rear bumpers of both the SUVs are connected here with a rope.
Round 1

In the first round, despite launching early, the Mahindra XUV700 failed to pull the Scorpio. The latter managed to pull off the XUV700 easily and drag it towards its direction for a couple of meters.
Round 2
In the second round, the XUV700 tried its best to pull off the Scorpio in its direction. But the Scorpio was too good to face a defeat. Here, the Scorpio ended up pulling the XUV700 towards itself for a few meters and emerged as a clear winner.
Conclusion
The Mahindra XUV700 used here is a FWD vehicle
The petrol-automatic Mahindra XUV700 might have a clear advantage over the Mahindra Scorpio in maximum power and torque figures. But there are two reasons for Scorpio’s victory in the rounds of the tug of war event.
First, the Scorpio here was a diesel-powered SUV, in which the maximum torque arrives in lower engine rev ranges compared to the petrol-automatic XUV700. Second, the Scorpio has a rear-wheel-drive configuration, which offers better traction while pulling heavy loads compared to a front-wheel-drive vehicle like the XUV700 here.
The result indicates that the Scorpio still feels good enough for its true virtues as a rugged and durable SUV for Indian road conditions, despite being an aged product in front of the XUV700.
