Hopefully, other Thars in the country will receive the anti-theft alarm update soon.
A factory-fitted anti-theft alarm is pretty standard on cars these days. So, one would expect the Mahindra Thar, which costs upwards of Rs 12 lakh, to be equipped with such a basic feature. As it turns out, that isn’t the case.
The official brochure of the Thar from November 2022 does mention Anti-Theft Alarm. However, much to his surprise, BHPian wooka found out the “alarm” in his Thar didn’t work as advertised by the company.
As per the user’s manual, the security system is only activated when the vehicle is locked using the Smart Key and locking doors with the manual key will not activate the system. It also mentions that using the ignition key to open the door when the vehicle is locked and armed with Smart Key will set off the alarm. This clearly suggests that the Thar is equipped with the necessary hardware. It’s the software that could be the limiting factor.
Subsequently, wooka raised a complaint to get clarification from Mahindra. After some back and forth, the company responded saying that the buzzer / alarm feature was not available in the new Thar. It seemed like there was an issue with the way the system was set up and should’ve been clarified at the time of purchase.
In a recent update, BHPian wooka has confirmed that Mahindra installed a security system in his car. This was done remotely through a software update. Now, when the car is unlocked and none of the doors is opened, it automatically locks itself with a single honk. The alarm goes off when any of the four doors including the bonnet is opened. Also, the car cannot be locked when the bonnet is open.
It seems Mahindra had been working to rectify this glaring safety issue with the Thar, and hopefully, it would be rolled out to other Thars as well.
