The picture shows all the motorists including the two-wheeler riders waiting patiently in a queue. This is nothing special but in India, such a sight is a rare occurrence. For a long time, the North-Eastern states of India have been appreciated for their exceptionally well traffic discipline. This picture captures the moment perfectly.
Why is lane discipline important?
Lane discipline simply reduces the congestion at large. If everyone waits patiently on the roads, it reduces the traffic congestion by a great deal. In India, everyone wants to rush ahead creates a bottleneck on the roads and it increases the overall travel time.
Also, longer traffic jams can spill over to other spots and create gridlock. That is why most cities get into gridlock during the rush hours. Waiting patiently instead will allow the traffic to disperse properly.
Maintaining the lanes also reduces the number of accidents on the roads. People are more aware when they travel in lanes and that is why lane splitting can cause accidents, especially on the highways.
Not maintaining lane discipline is illegal
While no one follows lane discipline in India. It is illegal not to do so. The police can challan you but no cop enforces it properly yet.
Most metropolitan cities now have a network of CCTV that is closely monitored by a team of police personnel. The cops issue challan based on the violation by tracking the registration number. However, many online challans are wrong due to faulty number plates. Wrong challans can be challenged through the redressal portal of the traffic police. In recent times, the government and the authorities have worked to increase the challan amount. The increase in the fines is to reduce the number of violations and to make the roads safer.
India has one of the highest road accidents in the world and one of the highest ratios of fatal accidents. Many road users lose their lives due to rash driving and not following traffic rules. The aim of the surveillance is to reduce the number of people who do dangerous manoeuvres on the roads. The police have even started a crackdown on the vehicles that do not have rearview mirrors or do not use them. In Hyderabad, the cops have started issuing challans to the two-wheeler owners who do not have mirrors installed. The cops of other cities are expected to implement the same in the near future.
