The incident happened in Indore, Maharashtra where cops seized three Renault Kiger compact SUVs because all three of them had the same number plate. The cars belonged to a dealership and they had a five-digit registration number.
Traffic DCP Mahesh Chand Jain, Additional DCP Anil Patidar and their team stopped a Renault Kiger for having a five-digit registration number. The driver was not able to present satisfactory paperwork regarding the vehicle.
The driver said that it is a demo car so it belongs to a dealership. So, the police decided to reach the dealership and get the documents of the vehicle. At the dealership, cops found two more Renault Kigers with the same five-digit registration number. The dealership was not able to present documents for any of the vehicles. Moreover, there were 7 e-challans pending for red-light violations on the same registration number. So, the cops decided to tow the cars using a crane and seized them.
Using fake registration numbers is an offence
A person is supposed to tinker with the registration plate of their vehicle. Registration plates are unique to a particular vehicle. They are issued by the RTO or Registration Transport Office. The number plates help police in tracking the vehicle in case of a crime or theft. The registration number is also linked to the chassis number and engine number of the vehicle. So, no two cars can have the same registration number, engine number and chassis number.
To prevent tampering with the registration number plate, the government has introduced High-Security Registration Plate or HSRP. Some states have mandated the use of HSRP. It comes with a non-removable snap-on lock so it cannot be reused or replaced. It also comes with a unique laser code and a chromium-based stamp. Not every mechanic is authorized to install an HSRP number plate. You will have to search online for the dealers that are authorized to install the number plate.
