The Morgan 3 Wheeler isn’t dead, and in fact a new one is just around the corner.
On February 24, British retro automaker Morgan will reveal its all-new three-wheeled model.
Morgan is keeping the name of the new 3 Wheeler close to its chest until the reveal date.
This new Morgan 3 Wheeler model will debut a “clean-sheet visual design” although it’s still inspired by mid-century racers.
It’ll still have a recognisable silhouette with its open-air cabin, as well as two front wheels and singular rear wheel.
The 3 Wheeler also marks a new product ethos since the launch of the Aero range, which launched in 2000.
3 Wheeler prototype
Gone is the exposed V-Twin engine of the previous model, with Morgan confirming it’ll be replaced with a Ford-sourced three-cylinder engine of unknown displacement and with unspecified power and torque outputs.
Ford currently offers a variety of three-cylinder engines ranging from the 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder used in the Puma, to the peppy 1.5-litre turbo three-pot used in the Fiesta ST.
The last 3 Wheeler was powered by a 2.0-litre V-Twin engine producing 60kW of power and 140Nm of torque, which was sent to the singular, rear wheel through a five-speed Mazda-sourced manual transmission.
The 100km/h sprint took a claimed six seconds, and flat out it’d do 185km/h.
Besides the previous prototype imagery of the new 3 Wheeler, Morgan revealed a singular teaser image that shows three separate 3 Wheeler models with different accessories.
Morgan is claiming the new 3 Wheeler will be the company’s “most configurable vehicle ever” and will offer an extensive array of accessories at launch.
The British automaker says that it’ll show “several identities” of the 3 Wheeler at its launch with “bold, individual, and eccentric colours”.
“The next chapter of Morgan’s three-wheeled story will begin on 24 February, and we couldn’t be more excited to finally show it to the world,” said Morgan Motor Company Chairman and CEO Steve Morris.
“The all-new model continues a 113-year legacy of three-wheeled Morgan cars, and – as has always been the case – the new model will be totally different to anything else.”
For now we’ll have to wait until the new 3 Wheeler’s launch to see what it has in store.
Previously, Morgan flirted with the idea of an electric 3 Wheeler, but the EV3 never got off the ground.
Revealed at the 2016 Geneva motor show, the EV3 packed an electric motor and a 20kWh battery.
Due to supply issues and a faltering partnership with now-liquidated Frazer-Nash Energy Systems, the EV3 was shelved indefinitely.
