The 2022 Jeep Compass has earned a Top Safety Pick award from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when it’s ordered with specific headlights.
To earn a top award, a vehicle must get the highest rating of “Good” in six crash tests, including front and side, and roof strength and head restraints. It must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns “Advanced” or “Superior” ratings, both for vehicle and pedestrian detection.
Vehicles can earn Top Safety Pick if at least one headlight system rated “Good” or “Acceptable” by the IIHS is available. To get the highest Top Safety Pick+, headlights that meet those ratings must be standard on all trims. The Compass earns an “Acceptable” rating for its base LED headlamps when they are equipped with automatic high-beam assist, while its available LED projector headlights earn a “Good” rating.
Most vehicles are rated by both the IIHS, a non-profit association, and by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an agency of the U.S. federal government. It’s not clear how their crash-test methods differ, but in its rating, the NHTSA only gave the 2022 Compass a four-star rating for overall and frontal crash, instead of its highest five-star.
