While the all-new Thar is way better than its predecessor, there is a way to convert the older version to the newer one
With the second-generation model introduced in 2020, the Mahindra Thar retained its original fan base of ‘four-by-four’ purists and at the same time, attracted many new buyers with its urban-oriented appeal. Any newbie can feel that the new second-generation model is a massively improvised version of its predecessor in all parameters – whether you take its styling and fit and finish in and out or the engineering prowess under the skin.
It has somewhat amazed the owners of the older version of the Mahindra Thar, who cannot believe how much improvement the SUV has received in its newer avatar. One such owner of the previous-generation Mahindra Thar decided to modify his SUV massively to make it look like the newer second-generation model. Here’s a YouTube video by Unique Customs that shows the massive transformation.
What are the exterior changes in this transformation job?
The Mahindra Thar shown in the video is essentially the previous-generation version, which looks like the all-new model from every angle. The exterior design is entirely revamped, with the new body panels, including the bonnet, front and rear fenders, door panels, boot lid and hardtop coming from the new model’s design. Even the front face now resembles that of the new model, with the revised grille, heavy-duty front bumper. In addition, this customized Thar receives LED headlamps, which are otherwise halogen units in the model on sale.
This is the old-generation Mahindra Thar
There are two differences visually when you compare this modified model and the one officially on sale right now. This modified Thar gets different looking five-spoke silver alloy wheels unlike the gunmetal grey alloy wheels in the new version. In addition, it misses out on the impressive-looking tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
What are the changes inside the cabin?
There are several changes inside the cabin as well
This modified Mahindra Thar impresses a lot with the changes it has received on the inside as well. Generally, the aftermarket car modifiers don’t change the cabin’s originality much. However, this car modifier has swapped the dashboard layout too, which looks very similar to that of the new version of the Thar.
Main parts of the cabin, such as a new instrument console, a centre console with a touchscreen music system and revised lower housing for AC vents and dials, and a covered glovebox on the co-passenger side of the dashboard looks very much like in the newer model. It is the older and utilitarian three-spoke steering wheel, that looks like that in the older model.
It even gets a sunroof
Even the upholstery of the Mahindra Thar has received a significant upgrade. The door panels and seats get a quilted artificial beige leather finish, while the driver’s seat now gets powered adjustments. Even the roof of the SUV is customized heavily with quilted leather and roof-mounted speakers, the latter of which are available in the new version of the Thar.
Should you get it done?
While there is a long waiting period on the all-new Thar
This modification job shows that the older Mahindra Thar can transform to make it look like the new model, with significant changes. However, such changes are not officially endorsed by the carmaker or the law books, as they hamper the vehicle’s originality, which is not allowed legally. Also, there are a few rough edges on the inside, especially the panel gaps in the dashboard, which make it look like a job half done.
Does this modification work in the Mahindra Thar here looks neat? Let us know in the comments below.
