The lucrative crossover segment is a market that the French brand hopes to conquer once again and “win back” buyers with the new 2022 Renault Austral SUV by focusing on handsome styling, a wide range of powertrains and improved material quality.

The highly teased mid-size SUV is a bold and upmarket looking option in what is typically a monotonous segment but styling is not the only capitalising factor that Renault claims their new model brings to the table.

A host of hybrid powertrains are selectable by consumers who are looking for improved efficiency without compromising on an upmarket or spacious interior. This is compliments on the new third-generation CMF-CD platform which was co-developed alongside a Mitsubishi and Nissan alliance.
The 2022 Renault Austral will be the first from the French brand to use the platform which can accommodate a range of electrified drivetrains. The model will have two full-hybrid systems which couple the electric motor to a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor which is good for 117 kW and 146 kW respectively. Renault claims this can achieve a very modest 3.8L/100 km in a combined test cycle while emitting only 105g/km of CO2. An alternative mild-hybrid is stated to achieve only 4.4L/100 km by pairing the same engine to a 48V battery and a belt-integrated starter-generator for an electric boost under load.

Further down the range buyers can purchase 12V mild-hybrid models with a 1.3-litre four-cylinder that enjoys a 5.1L/100 km efficiency rating in either a 102 kW or 117 kW derivative.

The 2022 Renault Austral SUV will be the first to offer the Esprit Alpine (spirit of Alpine) spec which is a trim modelled on Alpine’s sports cars consisting of a satin grey paint finish with black trim and bespoke 20-inch alloys adorned with Alpine badging. The interior includes Alcantara-upholstered seats with Alpine logos and blue stitching.

Renault will start taking Austral orders in mid 2022 in an effort to steal some market share away from the Ford Kuga and Toyota Rav4. We are yet to receive information as to whether the new model will sell on our local shores but we can only speculate that their poor mid-size SUV performance in the past wouldn’t justify bringing it to South Africa.
