The Morgan Motor Company has been around for well over 100 years, and in addition to building some wonderfully charming sports cars, it has also played witness to the world’s hardships – it has seen war, crisis and rationing in its existence. However, the coronavirus pandemic is one of the largest international struggles it has ever seen, and something that has caused the longest factory shutdown in Morgan history. To raise money to support those in need, Morgan gave away a new Plus Four.
In partnership with BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief’s ‘The Big Night In’ appeal, Morgan offered people a chance to win a new Plus Four customised to their exacting specifications. As if that wasn’t a good enough prize, the winner would also have the first year of tax and insurance covered by Morgan. The car itself is worth £62,995 before options.
The Morgan Plus is the British marque’s latest model and utilises and all-new platform. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre engine provided by BMW, something that propels this lightweight sports car from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds.
Over £1.39 million was raised by people entering the competition, with the winner being chosen at random. When contacted, the lucky new owner was ‘delighted and overwhelmed’ to have won the car. They will receive a bespoke customisation session to design their dream car, and tour the historic Malvern factory before collecting the prize post-lockdown.
The money raised will be matched by the British government and donated to various charities around the UK to help support people through the current crisis. A broad range of bases will be covered such as organisations that help keep people safe, mental health support, and providing food and shelter to those in need.
Steve Morris, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Motor Company, said: “On behalf of the Morgan Motor Company, I would like to extend our gratitude to all those who entered the Plus Four competition and helped to contribute such a significant amount towards the Big Night In appeal. The amount raised exceeded the figure that we’d hoped to achieve, and we feel proud to have been able to help towards the relief efforts in such a way.”
Congratulations to the winner and Morgan for raising such an incredible sum of money.
