The current generation Polo is quite the advanced vehicle, but what are the top six differences between the previous generation Polo versus the current generation?
Bigger, more stylish and with a new engine line-up. Those are the main differences between the previous-gen VW Polo and the current Polo.
Number 1
The latest Polo is identified easily by a much sleeker frontal appearance. The headlights are narrower and integrate more smoothly into the grille. The tail lights are also much more modern. Returning to the front, the lower air intakes are more integrated into a colour-coded bumper, although, on the more sporty models, a black grille surround has been added to the newer cars. There are more subtle styling lines on the flanks of the latest car. Wheel designs are also new; you can even get an LED light strip running across the headlights and grille.
Number 2
Apart from these differences, the new Polo looks much the same as the old, but it is bigger, if only slightly. In fact, it has grown in overall length by at least 81 mm, is wider by at least 69 mm and has a longer wheelbase, with at least 78 mm more length between the front and rear axles.
Number 3
The engine line-up has changed dramatically. Now you can buy any Polo you like as long as it’s a 70 kW three-cylinder petrol turbo! With the previous model, you could choose between an 81 kW three-cylinder petrol, a 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol in either 66 kW or 81 kW output, or a 1,5-litre three-cylinder diesel.
Number 4
The GTI models are the exception to the engine policies in both previous and current generations. The previous Polo GTI had a 1.8-litre petrol turbo with 141 kW. The latest Polo GTi has a two-litre turbo petrol engine with 147 kW. For more details on the Polo GTI, click here.
Number 5
The latest Polo has a totally new interior with modern infotainment. There is more interior space than the old model, thanks largely to the increase in wheelbase. The luggage volume has also grown from 280 litres to 350 litres. Yet the new model is lighter than the old model, by as much as 100 kg in some cases. The new car weighs in at just over 1,000 kg, whereas the previous car weighed about 1 180 kg. This weight changes according to trim variants on both old and new models.
Number 6
The previous Polo came with four airbags, while the new model is equipped with six airbags. For a review on the latest-generation car, you can read one of our reviews here.
