Like it or not – the EV takeover has begun. Yes, it will be some time before they fully take over, and with a little bit of luck for us gearheads, combustion will live on through synthetic fuel and hydrogen combustion, but EVs are becoming mainstream, and gas stations are even installing EV chargers.
Many drivers and families have already moved to the all-electric car as early adopters of the technology and, as such, are encountering problems with either low range or slow charging. Just like smartphones, we want fast-charging electric vehicles. Everything is readily available in today's busy and connected life, so waiting hours to charge just won't cut it. Manufacturers have set out to push the boundaries of electrification and fast charging, and we've gone out to find just which electric car charges the fastest. We've included two metrics here, the first being how long it takes to charge from 10-80% (5-80 in some cases as noted), which is an industry-standard, but since battery capacities vary, we've also included the officially claimed charging rate.
And before the angry mob comes after us, Teslas can only charge at 250 kW, meaning they don't qualify for this list.
10. Genesis Electrified G80 | 350kW, 22 Mins
If you're not familiar with the brief history of Genesis yet, the company was formed in 2015 as the luxury arm of Hyundai with more premium offers, not too dissimilar to the Toyota-Lexus connection. With a worldwide shift to electric transportation, it's no surprise Genesis has jumped on the bandwagon with premium electric offerings.
Owing to an 800V wiring system, the Electrified G80 can charge at 350kW. You'd think that with such high charging capability, the G80 would find itself in a better position on the list; however, the car carries around an 87.2kWh battery, meaning more charge is ultimately needed. Nevertheless, you'll only have to spend an extra 2-3 minutes waiting even at the peak charging rate, so go grab yourself another coffee. There are benefits to this, as being a larger than average battery size, the G80 will be able to travel 323 miles on a single charge making it the perfect road trip companion.
9. Audi RS e-tron GT | 270kW, 22.5 Mins
Effectively the same car as the Porsche Taycan underneath, the Audi e-tron GT and its RS e-tron GT performance sibling share much of their technology with its sibling. Oddly enough, the cars aren't exactly the same battery-wise. As standard, the e-tron twins get a 93 kWh battery, and every model receives Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system with dual-electric motors.
The electric car will charge from 5-80% in 22.5 minutes at a peak charging speed of 270kW. Despite having a bigger battery and a slower peak charging speed, it's able to recoup more charge more rapidly than the Genesis above.
Perfromance-wise, at its peak, the RS e-tron GT produces up to 637 horsepower, drives 232 miles on a charge (236 for non-RS model), and does 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds.
8. Porsche Taycan | 270kW, 22.5 Mins
Picture this, you own a Porsche Taycan, your buddy purchased an e-tron GT in the hopes of it being similar, and you decide to do a road trip together. Once your cars reach 5% battery, you both decide to pull over and do a quick charge, and they hit 80% SOC at the exact same time. Well, of course they would, because, with the Performance Battery, the Taycan has the same capacity and the same maximum 270 KW charge speed.
The Porsche was actually the first electric vehicle to support 800-volt fast charging and offers a range of anywhere between 208 and 246 miles depending on the model you choose. The Taycan uses a 270kW-capable charging system and offers you the choice of either a 79.2kWh or 93.4kWh battery.
7. Genesis Electrified GV70 | 350kW, 18 Mins
10-80% in 18 minutes seems to be the standard for mid-range to upper-class EVs nowadays, with half the electric cars on this list boasting the same charging time. If not already evident, Korean manufacturers are doing everything they can to ensure they're considered top contenders in the electric car market. But that's also because they all share the same e-GMP platform with the same 350kW charging speed. Only the battery sizes differ, which is why the Electrified GV70 charges quicker than the Electrified G80.
Based on the styling of the standard ICE Genesis GV70, the Electrified version is powered by a 77.4 kWh battery paired with an 800-volt wiring system. The vehicle allows a peak charging rate of 350kW and offers a respectable 283 miles of range at full charge.
6. Genesis GV60 | 350kW, 18 Mins
Not too dissimilar to the GV70, the GV60 is the smaller, sportier, and more fun-loving of the two siblings. However, the GV60 is only offered as an electric vehicle and runs most of the same technology found throughout the Electrified GV70. At peak charging performance, the 800-volt system boasts a 350kW charging rate, and it utilizes the same 77.4 kWh battery pack.
So what gives the GV60 the right to sit above its sibling in the list of fast-charging electric vehicles? Due to its size, weight, and better aerodynamics, the GV60 boasts a significantly greater range than its larger sibling. Where the GV70 only manages 283 miles, the GV60 will continue until it reaches 321 miles, a significant difference between the two.
5. Hyundai Ioniq 5 | 350kW, 18 Mins
Would you look at that, another Korean car with a 10-80% charge time of 18 minutes when using a fast charger? The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai's attempt at making a fast, luxurious, and eco-friendly crossover – and believe it or not, it too has the ability to charge at a peak rate of 350kW because it uses the same underpinnings as its siblings – who said platform sharing was overrated?
The charging performance trend of 18 minutes at 350kW on this list may make you feel like these are all just the same car with a different face, but the Ioniq 5 is something rather special. In 2022, the little EV won the World Car of The Year title and also picked up World Electric Vehicle of The Year and World Car Design of The Year, and sits right up there on the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ list.
4. Kia EV6 | 350kW, 18 Mins
Essentially, the Kia EV6 is the same car as the Ioniq 5, with a different face and a new logo slapped onto it. That's a drastic oversimplification, but it offers the same charging speeds, same battery as the top-of-the-line Ioniq 5, and produces the same 320-hp as the AWD Ioniq 5.
So, what makes the Kia EV6 better? First, it currently holds the Guinness World Record for the least amount of charging time needed to cross the US in an EV. So in real-world terms, less charging is needed. It charges at a peak of 350 kW and needs the same 18 mins to charge as its badge-engineered sibling. The EV6 will manage 300 miles of range even in its all-wheel drive guise, whereas the Ioniq 5 only manages this with rear-wheel drive.
3. Hyundai Ioniq 6 | 350kW, 18 Mins
We're starting to sound like a broken record, so let's make it quick. 800-volt wiring system, 77.4-kWh battery pack, 350kW peak fast charging capacity, and 10-80% in 18 minutes. Now that we've got that out of the way, the Ioniq 6 holds all those same World Car awards the Ioniq 5 held last year and offers a much more sleek and modern design.
The 6 is a sedan this time around and is far less boxy as a result. This means that even though the technology seems identical to that of the Ioniq 5 and EV6, it can manage 361 miles on a single charge, owing to the impressive drag coefficient of 0.21.
2. Rimac Nevera | 500kW, 19 minutes
Finally, a car that doesn't completely match the offerings of the Koreans. The Rimac Nevera is a hypercar and one that is capable of redefining performance cars in a straight line and around corners, too. The car is home to a massive 120 kWh battery, good for providing 1,914-hp worth of electric motors with enough juice to nail a 0-60 time of under two seconds.
This list isn't about performance, however, it's about charging times. The hypercar from Rimac will charge from 0-80% in just 19 minutes. Not only does that include an extra 10% over the past few electric cars we mentioned, but it also pertains to a much larger battery. This is one of the fastest-charging electric cars on the market; how have they achieved such a feat? Simple, the Nevera is actually capable of handling 500kW of DC fast charging, thanks to a huge focus on battery technology.
1. Lucid Air | 300kW, 16 minutes
You asked the question, “Which electric car charges the fastest?” and we have your answer. Bring on the Lucid Air, one of the newest and most anticipated fast-charging electric vehicles on the market. Lucid doesn't make it easy to track down charging speeds and 10-80% SOC rates, but that's partially because of the various battery sizes and charge rates of models within the lineup. Still, in its quickest-charging configuration (Air Pure), it'll take 16 minutes at a peak charge rate of 300 kW. Lucid proudly proclaims that its 900V+ charging architecture means it can add 300 miles of range in 20 minutes, the quickest EV to add 300 miles of range. That's because, while its charge rate is less than some on this list, it can maintain that rate for longer periods.
And, the Air is a hot performer, too, with the Air Sapphire producing 1,200 hp, while some variants are capable of more than 500 miles to a charge.
