The new Mazda2 range has been revised with some significant changes. Here we list our top 8 differences between the new and the out-going model.
The Mazda2 is one of those small cars that has been well under the radar for some time now. And yet it has a lot to offer, particularly in terms of fine build quality and performance.
The latest Mazda2 is priced between R254 300 for the entry-level 1.5 Active model to R342 200 for the range-topping 1.5 Hazumi Auto. This is quite a big price spread over six models, but the equipment levels between entry model and the range-topper are quite vast.
Facelift in late 2019
In late 2019 a significant face lift was carried out on the Mazda2, as well as a range rationalisation. This meant that the 1.5 DE Hazumi, a diesel-engined model, was dropped. For the latest range, which arrived in showrooms early in January 2020, all models use the 1,5-litre petrol engine. The Hazumi model still continues as the range-topper but is now available only in automatic form with the petrol engine.
The facelift addressed cosmetic and equipment levels, as well as some safety and dynamic changes. The following lists the significant differences between the outgoing Mazda2, which had received a revision in 2017, and the latest MY 2020 edition.
Top 8 differences between new and old Mazda2
- New grille. The major distinguishing feature of the 2020 Mazda2 is the new honeycomb grille. This is in line with the styling theme on the larger Mazda3 launched in mid-2019. The new grille is augmented by a new headlight design and bright-metal trim.
- LED lights. The newly-styled, sleek head lights are of the LED variety and these are fitted to all models of the revised Mazda2 range.
- New wheel style. The latest Mazda2 gets new alloy wheels to go with its new grille (there are are also minor changes to the rear bumper). While the entry-level Active model retains steel wheels with hubcaps, the Dynamic models (in manual and automatic) get 15-inch alloys. The Individual and Hazumi models get 16-inch alloy wheels with striking designs.
- Engine. The 1,5-litre four-cylinder engine has been up-rated from 82 to 85 kW and from 145 to 148 Nm of torque. Mazda lists a new 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust system for the power increase.
- 6 airbags. The Mazda2 range now boasts 6 airbags, apart from the entry-level Active model, which still makes do with 2 airbags. Previously the whole range was fitted with just 2 airbags.
- Stability control. The Dynamic, Individual and Hazumi models now also enjoy the benefits of DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). This feature brakes individual wheels and automatically reduces engine power when the car loses traction in a corner, or when undertaking a radical avoidance manoeuvre that causes it to skid.
- Upgraded infotainment pod. The infotainment system has been upgraded on the latest Mazda2 and the top Hazumi model now features integrated Navigation.
- Blind spot monitoring. The top Hazumi model now features blind spot monitoring as well as rear cross-traffic alert assistance.
