Basic information about my car:
2020 Mazda Cx-5 2.5 turbo
Reasons why I bought this car:
I am looking for a powerful yet comfortable car for long distance cruises. Among all Japanese brands, Lexus and Mazda are my top choice for their premium build quality. Thus, Cx-5 was chosen because of cheaper price, comparable build quality with Lexus, and free 6 years maintenance services (for 2020 new car).
Car Selection Process
- I had a budget of RM 200,000.00
- Models that I have considered include: Lexus NX200t (recon), Lexus RX200t (recon)
I had been doing research and test driving for 1 year before I decided to buy this car. Cars that I had tested include Lexus NX200t, Lexus RX200t, VW Passat, VW Arteon, BMW 330i, Ford Mustang 2.3 ecoboost. Cx-5 is not the most comfortable car (Lexus is the best), not the fastest (compared to mustang, 330i), and not that “branded” (compared to BMW, lexus). However, it is the most balanced car where it gives you good comfort, good power, budget pricing, and low profile. Where else to find a car with 2500cc turbo engine, 228 hp, 420nm torque, with a price tag less than RM200k? Only Mazda.
Another reason Mazda stands up is the free 6 years (or 120,000km) maintenance services. So I can basically just refill petrol and pay the monthly loan without having to worry about the cost of routine services.
User Experience
- I have already done 19116 km.
- My average fuel consumption is 10.2L/100km.
The car is well balanced, good quality, and provides more than enough torque to dominate the right line.
It is comfortable for long cruising for the driver, but not for rear seat passengers due to the slightly tight legroom and straight sitting position. The overall build quality is very premium and nice to touch. However, the assembly quality should be improved as the majority of Mazda owners complain of rattling sound from their cars regardless of model. My personal experience, there is always one screw loosened and when you tighten one, another screw from another location will loosen and create noise again. It is almost impossible to get a quiet cabin.
The engine is powerful for acceleration. Overtaking the others is so easy that you will soon adopt the aggressive driving style because you are unable to stand the “slow” car in front of you. However, the top speed is electronically limited at 206km/h, which is different from the advertised 226km/h. This is definitely a disappointment and Mazda Malaysia should not lie to the customer.
The top speed is one of the main reasons I chose cx-5 instead of NX200t, which is way superior in terms of comfort (top speed 200km/h). The car is also very sensitive to type of petrol. Ron 97 performs significantly better than Ron 95. Ron 97 is way more expensive for a valid reason.
On the other hand, the 2.5 turbo engine is a bit too powerful for the chassis. At the high speed cornering, you can feel the car shaking left and right. But after I installed the safety bar, it performs well and cornering at 160-170km/h is no longer an issue. I would recommend anyone who uses cx-5 to install the safety bar, it does make significant improvement.
Pros and Cons
Pros of my car
– Powerful Acceleration – Good comfort for driver – Well equipped with latest technology – Premium interior material – low profile – still the best looking SUV in the market
– A lot of accessories available for those like to modify the car
Cons
– Should be honest with the top speed in marketing – Less comfortable for rear seat passenger – Lack of MRCC – Need safety bar
– rattling noise everywhere

Summary:
Still the best choice if you are looking at SUV with good looking and specification which under RM200,000.00
