Big rims offer big bling, but the tradeoffs can be astronomical, both in terms of costs and ride-quality
A few days ago, we saw a Mahindra Scorpio with 26-inch rims. Here are bigger rims on bigger cars and they absolutely look nuts!
Key Highlights
- Massive 28-inch rims on new Fortuner and Legender
- Several modifications required to fit such massive wheels
- Bigger tyres are illegal in India
- Oversized rims affect the suspension
Overview
Toyota Fortuner and the Legender are considered as one of the most capable SUVs. But with these new wheels, we can only imagine moving it slowly on the tarmac. Here is a Toyota Fortuner and a Toyota Fortuner Legender with massive 28-inch rims. We have not spotted such massive rims on any car in India yet. Have you?
28-inch rims on Fortuner and Legender
The videos shared on the Aamiro channel do not talk about the installation process or the price of the alloy wheels. But similar 26-inch rims on Mahindra Scorpio costs around Rs 4 lakh. These are bigger rims so they can cost close to Rs 5 lakh.
We won’t deny that the rims do look very attractive on the SUVs. The oversized multi-spoke rims look hypnotising in motion. But to fit them properly, several modifications are needed.
These rims get a chrome finish and add the bling to the SUVs. Low-profile tyres are added to the rims and the whole set-up is drool-worthy!
What are the problems with oversized rims?
And they are illegal as well
First of all, they are illegal in India. By law, oversized rims that are too big compared to the stock wheels are illegal. There is no defined number on how big the aftermarket rims can be though.
These 28-inch rims change the look completely
If you do not fear getting caught by authorities, then be assured that these rims only look on the car from outside. With such large aftermarket tyres, the handling goes for a toss and it becomes quite difficult to steer the vehicle. That is why you see cars with oversized tyres get around quite slowly. Cars with oversized rims also return significantly less fuel efficiency than the stock.
Even the suspension gets affected due to the larger wheels. The suspension does not get much room to work and the bigger rims and tyres put extra pressure on the CV joints and they can be expensive to repair.

Without a properly working suspension, the ride quality also gets affected. The larger wheels put extra pressure on the brakes, steering column and even the speedo is inaccurate!
