The company has already stopped developing IC engines for the European market.
Japanese carmaker Nissan is said to stop developing new internal combustion engines in all its major global markets, except the USA. According to a media report, Nissan will continue limited development of IC engines for the US markets, mainly for its pick-up trucks, but, beyond that, the company will be shifting focus towards electric vehicles.
Reports suggest that the company has already stopped developing IC engines for the European market. Further, Nissan stated that while the development of IC engines will be discontinued, it will continue to develop engines for hybrid vehicles. The carmaker will update the current engine designs going forward rather than developing new ones.
Reports also suggested that the plants producing the engines will continue to run without disturbance. However, once the company does shift to EVs, personnel working on engine development & production will be relocated to the EV, hybrid and other divisions.
