Nissan is planning to scale back its European operations, including ramping up outsourcing to its alliance partner Renault, according to a report in a Japanese newspaper.
The Japanese manufacturer will slash distribution channels in 30 territories, focussing on eastern European markets such as Hungary and Poland and western markets in the Netherlands, the report in the Yomiuri newspaper said.
The OEM’s main target markets in Europe will be Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, and northern Europe, where EV sales are strengthening, according to the report.
The cutbacks are part of Nissan’s global turnaround plan, which was announced in spring 2020. According to the plan, Nissan plans to move its operations away from Europe, and instead shift its primary focus to China, the United States, and Japan.
The report did not mention Nissan’s factory in Sunderland, England, which has around 6,000 employees and where the automaker builds their ever-popular Juke and Qashqai SUVs, and Leaf electric hatchbacks.
