Nissan’s Pathfinder heads back to its rugged roots with a more capable model launched in the US
A more capable and rugged-looking version of the new-generation 2022 Nissan Pathfinder has emerged in its US home market.
There’s no word yet on whether the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek will make to it Australia as the Japanese brand prepares to introduce its fifth-generation Pathie later this year, with a spokesperson telling carsales today that the local line-up would be revealed closer to launch.
But there’s clear intent here from Nissan that it’s toughening up the image and capability of its large SUV, which was originally launched as a harder-core model based on the Navara ute but today has more of an on-road focus.
Described by Nissan’s North American arm as being “bolder” and “off-road inspired”, the toughened-up new Pathfinder rides 16mm higher than the standard versions and is only available with all-wheel drive.
The extra clearance, revised suspension tune and all-paw traction combine with standard-fit all-terrain tyres to ensure the Rock Creek is the most capable Pathfinder to come from a Nissan factory since it ditched its rugged ladder-frame underpinnings back in 2012.
Revised fuel mapping also helps liberate an extra 9kW and 15Nm when the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine is running on premium-grade fuel, taking it to 221kW and 366Nm.
Other unique touches include 18-inch beadlock wheels, roof racks, unique front fascia, ‘Rock Creek’ badging, tow bar hitch and an ‘Intelligent Around View Monitor’ with Off-Road Mode similar to the one found on the current Navara.
The rugged theme continues inside with ‘Rock Creek’ embroidered leatherette and fabric seat upholstery, orange contrast stitching and captain’s chairs in the second row.
According to Nissan’s US marketing and sales chief Michael Colleran, the new-generation Pathfinder is “all about a ‘return to rugged’ and the Pathfinder Rock Creek takes that spirit even further”.
“From the urban jungle to the natural beauty that can be reached within minutes from the city, Pathfinder Rock Creek has both the style and hardware to create an adventure just about anywhere,” he said.
Enhanced versions of typically road-oriented SUVs have been gaining traction over the past 12 months, with models such as the Subaru Outback Wilderness and Subaru Forester Wilderness emerging in the US and being studied for possible release in Australia.
Kia has also jumped on the bandwagon with its X-Line range of vehicles, but these are also not yet confirmed for sale Down Under.
