Audi has unveiled a new, rear-wheel-drive version of the R8 performance – the R8 V10 performance RWD.
Unfortunately, Audi South Africa told TopAuto that the new R8 V10 performance RWD will not be reaching local dealerships.
The company said that the local arm of Audi does not offer any rear-wheel-drive R8 derivatives, and as such, “the R8 V10 Performance RWD which was just revealed is not planned for South African introduction,” said Audi South Africa.
What’s new
The R8 V10 performance RWD features the same 5.2-litre, V10, naturally-aspirated petrol motor as its all-wheel-drive quattro siblings, generating 419kW and 550Nm in this model.
Power is handled by a seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission that directs drive to the rear wheels, resulting in a 3.7-second 0-100km/h sprint for the Coupe, whereas the Spyder finishes the run in 3.8 seconds.
This is 0.5 seconds slower than the quattro derivatives in both instances.
Top speed for the RWD Coupe is then rated at 329km/h, with the Spyder’s coming in at a slightly lower 327km/h.
Thanks to a blend of lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) used on most parts of the R8, the vehicles also boast segment-leading kerb weights of 1,590kg for the Coupe and 1,695kg for the Spyder.
In addition, new bucket seats, a reworked steering set-up, “CFK” stabilisers, and ceramic disk brakes take “the experience to a whole new level” – said Audi.
Controlled drifts
The suspension and driving dynamics in the R8 V10 performance RWD are specifically balanced for a rear-wheel-drive car, which allows controlled drifts when Sport mode is activated.
Furthermore, the RWD R8 is fitted with dynamic steering – a first for any rear-wheel-drive R8 – and this provides even more precise reaction and feedback, said the company.
“This makes driving more dynamic through more direct steering, for example on curvy country roads or when turning,” said Audi.
“It also increases comfort by making steering easier, such as when parking or maneuvering.”
Lightweight 19 and 20-inch aluminium rims wrapped in Cup tyres assist with precise handling, too, while 18-inch high-performance steel brakes are fitted to provide enough stopping power.
