Nissan has filed a patent for what appears to be a new and simple logo featuring a two-tone finish and a total of five lines. The Japanese automaker hasn't put out a word regarding the matter so we're also wondering when or even where it would be used.
In Japanese, number two translates to “ni” (two vertical lines), while number three translates to “san” (three horizontal lines).
The current logo was introduced in 2020, replacing the 19-year-old emblem that had the Nissan script on silver surrounds. Speculating based on the timeline, Nissan won't likely roll out a new logo soon. Plus, the Nissan script has always been present throughout the different logo iterations since the brand started in 1933.

Journalist Reilly Brennan on Twitter captured the patent, saying the new logo represents the number 23 used by Nissan and its performance division, Nismo, globally.
Back in 1986, Nismo entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the No. 23 R86V piloted by three drivers including former Formula 1 driver Aguri Suzuki. Unfortunately, the first outing at the renowned world endurance race in France ended with a DNF status.
Currently, Nismo still features number 23 in its race cars including its Z GT500 entry at home racing series Super GT with Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli behind the wheel.

Other Nissan race cars that carried no. 23 include the #23 GT-R LM Nismo at the 2015 World Endurance Championship; #23 GT-R in the 1998, 2003, and 2008 Super GT seasons; #23 R91CP at the 1992 Daytona 24 Hours; #23 Primera at the 1999 British Touring Championship; and #23 GT-R Nismo GT1 at the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship.
While it appears the new logo is a better fit for Nissan's future racing programs, we won't know for sure until the company makes an official announcement.
The company plans to launch as many as 27 electrified models under the Nissan Ambition 2030, so we might see a few of them use the new logo in some way. We could see a similar pattern to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which uses the brand's original logo and another Morse code logo for the letter “H” on the steering wheel.
