Mazda has officially launched the new CX-60 in South Africa which has now assumed the flagship position of its local range.
The SUV is available in two specifications – Dynamic and Individual – with prices starting at R739,800.
“The all-new Mazda CX-60 represents everything that Mazda has built into its DNA over the last 100 years, from outstanding exterior and interior design to the finest Japanese craftsmanship, the latest innovations in human-centric technologies and powertrains,” said the carmaker.
Engine
Both versions of the CX-60 are driven by a 2.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine which generates 141kW and 261Nm.
They also use the same eight-speed automatic gearbox, though the Dynamic is rear-wheel drive (RWD) while the Individual offers all-wheel drive (AWD).
Consequently, the RWD model returns a slightly better fuel consumption of 7.3l/100km, compared to the AWD’s 7.7l/100km.
The Dynamic also has a slightly faster 0-100km/h acceleration time of 9.6 seconds versus the Individual’s 9.9 seconds, though both vehicles max out at the same top speed of 203km/h.
Features
The flagship CX-60 follows the brand’s “Jinba Ittai” design philosophy, which is a Japanese term used to describe the bond between a horse and its rider.
What this translates to is a spacious cabin with the latest technology, such as the Mazda Driver Personalisation System, which uses facial recognition to identify the occupant of the driver’s seat and adjusts the seat position, steering wheel, wing mirrors, and heads-up display (HUD) to fit their physique.
This system will also retract and extend the steering wheel automatically when the driver enters and exits the vehicle for ease of access.
There are three displays in total, the HUD (which is three times bigger than it was on the CX-30), a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a 12-inch LCD driver monitor, all of which are fully customizable.
The media system has onboard navigation with a keyword search function, as well as wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Another highlight of the CX-60 is its new audio setup, which was developed over the course of six years, according to the manufacturer.
It uses a 12-speaker Bose stereo, combined with multiple sub-woofers and tweeters as well as an amplifier located under the driver seat, to deliver a greater bass dynamic range and higher-quality sound reproduction.
It uses a new Master Sound Revive Noise Reduction technology to remove background noise from digital audio tracks – a first-ever for a car, said Mazda.
All five seats have also been designed to provide improved back support and comfort thanks to the use of additional cushion springs and a resin coating that provides greater elasticity and damping to the vehicle’s movements.
Other equipment on the premium SUV includes hill descent control, radar cruise control, a 360-degree camera, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic LED headlights, seven airbags, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a post-crash fuel cut-off system.
As a result of these all-encompassing safety features, the CX-60 achieved a 5-star Euro NCAP score.

The South African pricing for the new Mazda CX-60 is as follows:
