The Los Angeles Auto Show starts in a few weeks, and manufacturers are scrambling to showcase their latest innovations. One of the most anticipated is the new Mazda CX-50, a sports SUV that the Japanese manufacturer has built specifically for the American market and for which a teaser has already been released.
Recently, the Japanese manufacturer advanced the introduction of new models, including two for Europe and Japan and a slew for the United States. To be precise, one of those that will be a novelty on the other side of the Atlantic in 2022 is a novelty, since Hiroshima has officially announced the global premiere of the new Mazda CX-50.
A model that we expected earlier, and which the company has chosen to sell solely in the United States and Canada, rather than in Europe as initially intended. A step forward for Mazda USA -and the Canadian division- but one that only allows for a glimpse of part of this model’s characteristics. A careful examination shows a more recognizable profile than the coupe, particularly the back volume area, which is ideal for lifting a canoe onto the roof.
The new Mazda CX-50, in particular, is seen as a replacement for the brand’s existing D class SUV. The distinctions between the two versions will be immediately apparent, with an increase in the length’s height and a greater height. While maintaining a low profile, the design is beautiful and athletic, while greatly boosting inside space. Despite the changes, it is likely to share the same engine and transmission lineup, including all-wheel drive, as the CX-5 and CX-50 did for a while.
All four models are built on a new rear-wheel drive architecture, which will also accommodate more efficient hybrid systems, while vehicles targeted for the New Continent market will include current six-cylinder gasoline engines. The four-cylinder engines will be employed on the hybrids’ thermal side. A series of engines that will also power the upcoming Mazda 6 generation.
The front face has been overhauled, and the distinctive decorating surrounding the front grille is represented through surfaces rather than lines, conveying the ruggedness of a robust frame. The front grille design has also been altered dramatically, transitioning from a mesh-like surface expression to a floating expression of a three-dimensional component with a sense of depth.
The front and rear lamps are made more sporty by altering the lamp’s exterior form and lamp unit design. The bulb, which was originally shaped like an animal’s eyes, has been replaced with four horizontally oblong LED lamps that simulate the horizontal spread, greatly altering the expression.
The term “sports appearance” refers to a style that embodies the features of a sports utility vehicle. The distinctive wing, lower garnish, wheels, and other components have been gloss blacked to add a sporty touch.
The characteristic wing (grill edging) is black-plated, the grille is jet-black with red highlights, and the lower bumper, tire arches, and door garnish are gloss black. Also, the pillar garnish has been glossed, and the wheels have been upgraded to 19-inch black metallic.
The red accent on the grille is the same shade of “classic red” as on the original “NA Roadster.” It’s a point that adds to the ownership experience while also evoking Mazda’s sporting DNA.
The gasoline-powered “25S Sports Appearance (2WD / AT)” costs 3,256,000 yen, while the diesel-powered “XD Sports Appearance (2WD / AT)”. Each model is also available with a mix of 4WD and AT.
