The new Mazda CX-60 will be the brand’s first plug-in hybrid model
- Mazda set to launch new PHEV SUV
- Will share styling cues with the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda3
- New model will be revealed next week
A week before its full reveal, the new Mazda CX-60 has been teased again. The CX-60 will bear a resemblance to the Mazda CX-5 but will sit alongside it in the brand’s range. Orders for the new plug-in hybrid SUV will open later in the year, and it’s powertrain is likely to mean it’ll be more expensive than the CX-5.
Mazda’s latest teaser image doesn’t tell us an awful lot, except that LED headlights are available. The Japanese brand has also revealed that the CX-60 will be offered in a ‘delicately reflective’ white paint shade designed to show off the car’s design. Mazda’s glossy Soul Red crystal metallic paint will be another choice, if a previous teaser image is to be believed.
Recently, Mazda teased the interior of the new car showing part of the dashboard. We’re told that the interior of the CX-60 features an array of different material trims including nappa leather and woven fabrics, along with natural maple wood and chrome contrasting trim pieces. The image also features a unique stitching pattern, which is inspired by traditional Japanese binding techniques. This is designed to contrast with the new car's modern technology.
An earlier image from the brand gave a preview of the CX-60’s styling. At the front, the LED light signature extends into the large grille, which is surrounded by a dark trim piece. This image also previewed some of the sculpted lines on the bonnet too, suggesting that the CX-60 will take on some of the styling cues of the brand’s other models, such as the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-5.
The Mazda CX-60 won’t replace the CX-5, which has just been facelifted for 2022. It may be a similar size, but is set to sit above the current car. The CX-60 will be joined by a seven-seat Mazda CX-80 version that’s also set to get a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Consisting of a 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, Mazda’s plug-in hybrid SUV will have around 300bhp. No electric range figure has been given, but a range of over 30 miles would be necessary to keep the CX-60 competitive with rivals, which include the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Given that Mazda and Toyota have an ongoing partnership (the 2022 Mazda2 hybrid is a rebadged Toyota Yaris), the CX-60 could be due to get the same engine as the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. This also has a 2.5-litre petrol engine and 302bhp, albeit with a motor at each end to give four-wheel drive. Mazda has confirmed that the CX-60 will be rear-wheel drive.
Mazda plans to launch three new electric cars by 2025, with more to follow, and is working on a range-extender version of its Mazda MX-30 electric car using the brand’s famous rotary engine technology.
