Here's your first (teaser) look at the 2023 Mitsubishi ASX
Last week, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance announced that 80% of their cars will share vehicle platforms with one another. Not only will this help them make their Ambition 2030 plan a reality, but it will also help members of the Alliance to cut on costs and at the same make electrified vehicles available to more customers around the world.
One of these vehicles will be the next-generation Mitsubishi ASX. After soldiering on for over a decade, the crossover will finally be replaced by an all-new model that’s set to be revealed in early 2023. But unlike the outgoing model which was developed wholly by Mitsubishi, the next one will be based on a Renault.
With the ASX set to receive some French flair, we’re curious just how different it will look from the second-generation vehicle. Luckily for us, Mitsubishi has released a teaser photo of the upcoming vehicle. First shown last week during a presentation by Mitsubishi president and CEO Takao Kato, it’s quite apparent that the new-generation ASX will look very different.
Based on the lone image provided, the crossover will get a radical new front end that appears to be inspired by the Renault Captur or Arkana. It will also have a huge three-diamond logo at the front, along with what looks to be muscular wheel arches. Last but not least, the new ASX will come with a sloping roofline that appears similar to Renault.
Other details regarding the new generation ASX are still a mystery. However, Mitsubishi did mention that the all-new ASX will be available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains derived from Renault. This means it could be underpinned by Renault’s CMF-B platform which is available with a 1.6-liter gasoline-hybrid engine. At the other end of the spectrum, the ASX could also be powered by a 1.0-liter (Captur) or 1.3-liter (Arkana) turbocharged engine.
The all-new ASX is set to be built at the same factory that manufactures Renaults in Europe. But with Mitsubishi set to reveal it in 2023, it might be a while before we see any more details or teasers about the crossover.
