Mazda is launching its first model with a plug-in hybrid drive, the CX-60. Pre-orders for the CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV are now possible at prices starting at £43,950, with deliveries expected in autumn.

Mazda first announced the PHEV crossover in October 2021, at which time a larger seven-seater called the CX-80 was mentioned alongside the five-seater CX-60 – but no details about the powertrain. Since both models are based on the same platform, the following data should also apply to the larger CX-80, except for the electric range.

The crossover’s PHEV drive system consisting of a 2.5-litre gasoline engine with 141 kW and a 100 kW electric motor develops a system output of 241 kW. The 355-volt battery has an energy content of 17.8 kWh and enables a purely electric WLTP range of 63 kilometres. The larger and heavier CX-80 is likely to be slightly below this. The top speed in electric drive mode is 140 km/h.

The CX-60 has a two-phase AC onboard charger capable of charging at a maximum of 7.2 kW. Mazda does not mention a charging time in the announcement. If the 17.8 kWh is the net usable energy content, a charge at 7.2 kW will take about 2.5 hours. There is no option for a three-phase 11 kW charger or a DC charger.

Mazda points out that crossover is based on a completely new platform. Visually, it is strongly reminiscent of the manufacturer’s current SUV models, so it fits seamlessly into the model range. On the exterior, the CX-60 employs Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design “in its latest evolution,” while in the interior, different materials and surfaces, “maple wood, nappa leather combine with uniquely worked Japanese textiles and chrome details, and Musubu – the art of binding which was the inspiration for a specially detailed instrument panel stitching.”

The new Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV is now available for pre-order, with deliveries expected to begin in autumn. Prices start at £43,950 for the ‘Exclusive-line’, ‘Homura’ (from £46,700) and ‘Takumi’ (from £48,050) equipment lines are still available. Deliveries of the first customer vehicles are expected to begin in June this year.
